Ai primi chiarori dell'alba, Edith Durham e la sua guida escono furtivamente dalla città per entrare nel cuore dell'Alta Albania, in territori comunemente considerati pericolosi e quasi mai esplorati da viaggiatori stranieri. Se un secolo prima Lord Byron aveva celebrato l'Albania del sud, dedicandole versi magnifici nel Pellegrinaggio del Childe Harold, le regioni del nord rimanevano avvolte nel mistero: erano le terre "dell'innominabile turco", la frontiera fra islam e cristianità.
