Hardcover. nice solid copy light soiling to bottom edge internally clean; jacket is edgeworn small piece missing at bottom right-hand corner of front panel faint dampstain near top of front panel nearly split along rear foldover still quite attractive. Futurist fantasy in which a young Greek war refugee introduced to the wonders of modern machinery works his way up from garage mechanic to member of an airline crew. This gets him mixed up with a mysterious American arms merchant and he eventually finds himself a stowaway on a gigantic Russian airship the "Zodiak" operated by the Militant Anti-God League which of course! takes its marching er flying orders straight from Moscow and whose mission he discovers is to blanket the world with Communist propaganda leaflets and thereby lay the groundwork for a World Revolution. The book appears to be chock-full of mystical symbolism and stuff check the signs of the Zodiac on the jacket spine and in its closing pages the author quotes that well-known mystic Henry Ford: "Shall we not some day reach a point where the machine is becomes all powerful and the man of no consequence" Shall we not indeed . 1935azgwPutnam 1935. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 631 pages complete. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in the works of the troubled erratic Hans Fallada. Fallada's reputation first of all fell foul of the Nazis although he later had some of this restored on a rather shaky basis then of the post-war consensus. He had decided to remain in Germany even though his London publisher who published this volume had sent a private boat to whisk him away. Others felt he had been compromised by his decision to stay and by the pressures to comply with the strictures of Nazi regulations for acknowledged works of writing. Yet his repeated incarcerations in mental institutions due to consequent breakdowns from his financial condition and his internal conflicts with the reality of Nazi demands. This book published in 1934 as "Wir Hatten Mal Ein Kind" after he and his wife lost a child in childbirth tipped the balance to disapproval by the state. This is the FIRST EDITION of the English translation. This copy is in benign condition. The boards are scuffed and a little marked. The edges and corners have shelving wear. The inside front cover has a gift inscription not from the author!. The guttering along the title page is agape but this does not affect the security of the book. First edition of the first English translation of 'Wir Einmal Aus Dem Blechnapf Frisst' the translation was published in the same year as the novel was published in Germany. This novel of a petty criminal who finds it difficult to reintegrate into society after a spell in prison closely resembles Fallada's experience when he was imprisoned for fraud and theft due to his drug addictions. The book too closely details the way of life in Germany as the Nazis were enforcing their power. Indeed Fallada was in much trouble with the Nazis as this book was published. This copy is in benign condition. The boards are worn scuffed and marked all about. The corners are worn the spine has much wear to the head and foot. However the boards and spine are secure and comfortable. Within the contents are most pleasing. There are two previous owner signatures Dr I Sacks of Winburg. There are very occasional marks from use. By far the pages are in excellent condition. They are fresh in feel and aspect they are clean clear confident generous. fk.
