Title lettering on the front board now faded. Boards worn especially the tips and spine ends. Previous owner's gift inscription. The dust jacket is a worn fragment consisting of the front panel and parts of the spine. The dj is made from heavy grey stock with green decoration and red title; now held in place with a mylar sleeve. Sutton Elbert Griggs June 19 1872 – January 2 1933 was an American author Baptist minister academic administrator educator publisher and social activist. <br /> Griggs was African-American and known for African American literature and western fiction and wrote on social justice racial segregation and integration. In 1901 Griggs founded the Orion Publishing Company to sell books to the African American market. <br /> <br /> This is the author's second novel. Gibbons "with the compliments of the author." 303 5 pp. including five pages at rear advertising author's other works. Bound in publisher's maroon cloth stamped in silver and gold. About Good with heavy wear and rubbing to covers mottling to cloth staining to textblock edges and bumping to upper corners affecting textblock throughout. Front hinge broken rear hinge cracked binding shaken.<br /> <br /> <p>A signed copy of a significant book. Sutton E. Griggs was a Black Baptist minister and novelist who spoke out against racial injustice more fervently than many of his contemporaries. He wrote and self-published five novels all of which were intended to counter the white supremacist writings of Thomas Dixon and Thomas Nelson Page. The academic Hugh M. Gloster wrote in 1943:<br /> <br /> <p>"Though virtually unknown to white American readers his novels were probably more popular among the rank and file of Negroes than the fiction of Chesnutt and Dunbar. Militant and assertive Griggs chronicled the passing of the servile black man and hailed the advent of the intellectually emancipated Negro."<br /> <br /> <p>The Hindered Hand written in direct response to Dixon's The Leopard's Spots chronicles the fate of a mixed-race family and addresses numerous national and international issues. A graphic lynching scene based on actual events depicts the torture and immolation of a Black couple. The novel ends with two characters departing for Africa followed by the five-page appendix "Notes for the Serious." A call to action and celebration of achievement the book is a forerunner to the Black Power movement that emerged decades later. Gloster again now president of Morehouse College and writing in 1969 "American Negroes who espouse black beauty black pride black militancy and black separatism are ideological successors of Dr. Sutton E. Covers rather shabby & worn -- decorative white ruled-lines on front cover mostly gone; ends of backstrip worn; corners and edges bumped. Hinges cracked and reglued causing them to be a little stiff. No Jacket. Griggs has a separate essay at the end of this Third and final edition on Thomas Dixon's "anti-Black crusade "A Hindering Hand; Supplementary to the Hindered Hand : A Review of the Anti-Negro Crusade of Mr. Thomas Dixon Jr.". In the first two editions Dixon's book is discussed by two characters in the novel. This third edition greatly outsold the two earlier editions and almost all copies which turn up are Third editions. Attractive recent quarterbinding with marbled boards. Condition of the contents is about Good with some wear. a few brown spots and several partial erasures of some pencil markings. No Jacket. Rev. Griggs was the author of a number of books and is best known for the five novels he wrote and self-published between 1899 and 1908. This is a non-fiction item about racial issues which was apparently first published in 1909 in 2 versions of 116 and 134 pages a third version in 1910 of 145 pages and 2 further versions in 1911 of 193 and 259 pages. This makes our copy the 4th version or edition. We owe this information to John Gruesser a professor of English at Kean University who inquired about the contents of another copy and was kind enough not to mention our previous misidentification of the edition. One chapter or section that caught our eye is titled "Southern Statesmanship and the Negro Woman" pages 127-142 which talks about the defenseless position of African American women under white supremacy the claimed desire of whites to maintain racial purity and the impossibility of doing that unless African American women are protected from predatory white men. The 5th version apparently adds a final section -- with a separate title-page "Beyond the End" and a Table of Contents -- but we are told that no material in the first 193 pages appears to have been revised in that final edition.
