188926938Osaka Japan: Aoki Szandow 1889. C. 120 pages; most of which have an illustration and sometimes two. Text in Japanese; titles given in English. Colin Franklin in 'Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls' calls these publications an "appealing series of guides As travel within Japan had been restricted for three centuries and travel abroad forbidden these represented the new freedom. They combine charm with taste and a fine vagueness about that obsession of modern publishers "the market." As book-production they jump into more popular format with color-printed pictures over boards to bind themwith English captions erratic and fearless the many hundred illustrations which adorn the Japanese text.were they for the tour-guide to show his visitor - or in the world for Japanese travelers to show their guides Neither of these perhaps just a venture over the border into Western habit. They are excellent little books to leaf throughTechnically too they joined West with East. A new method was used for illustration: relief metal-cut like white-line wood engraving - Bewick's technique - difficult and delicate to manage practical in Japan for just a few years in the last quarter of the century. Paper suitable for such fine-line reproduction smooth machine-made was folded at the fore-edges in the traditional Japanese way. End-leaves and all edges were marbled an innovation for which as has been mentioned these books are now admired by collectors in JapanThey providetempting glimpses of all manner of scene and aspect of life on the eve of change" This is one volume of the 7-volume series. Approx. 4" x 6" size; bound in illustrated paper covered boards; cloth spine marbled endpapers all edges marbled. Some edge tips wear to the binding; contents in very good condition. . First Edition. 18002712bCaen: Chalopin 1800. 12mo 137 x 84 mm. 12 pp. Drop-title. Stab-stitched in original blue printed wrappers. Modern folding moroco-backed chemise and slipcase. A late chapbook incarnation of Vulson de La Colombière's treatise on dream interpretation first published 1660 this pocket-sized alphabetical list of dreams and their meanings had a practical purpose being sold as an aid for the selection of lottery numbers but see below. The association of dreams and lottery numbers derived from the Italian smorfia tradition which linked and still does the lottery and its numbers to dreams and the occult. The word smorfia refers to keys associating dreams with winning numbers also sometimes called cabala and by extension to the ephemeral publications containing these keys. "A feature of the Italian lottery throughout its history is the intense interest in occult methods of predicting the winning numbers. Foremost is the smorfia - a slang word meaning a wry grimace but also having overtones associated with the dream god Morpheus son of Hypnos God of Sleep." Adrian Seville History Today Vol. 49 no. 3 March 1999. In this brief pamphlet the connection with the lottery is indicated by a list of the 27 "most commonly pulled" lottery numbers printed at the end. Oddly all end in either 3 7 or 9. The dream descriptions however provide no lottery numbers. These highly abbreviated one-or-two-line summaries are simply followed by a verbal description of their degree and type of luck or lack of it or their meaning. Thus "to dream of being a tree" portends illness "kissing a dead person" promises long life though just kissing anyone signifies trouble. Arranged by keyword the list covers an impressive range of dream subjects: seeing oneself swimming in the sea loss and harm having long teeth trouble from one's parents dreaming that one is a doctor good luck hearing bells ringing signifies honor with boredom! etc.The attribution to the Caen chapbook printer/publishers Pierre-Jean-Aimé and Théodore Chalopin was made by René Helot who found several copies of the pamphlet in the Chalopin archives. OCLC locates 2 copies at the BnF and the Newberry. Cf. Helot La Bibliothèque bleue en Normandie 1928 245. Chalopin unknown books

18504999Torino: Fratelli Reycend 1850. Soft cover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 1 ff 240 pp with engraved title page frontispiece and 7 further acqua-forte engraved plates. Bound in original publisher's printed brown wrappers minor damage to spine clean and fresh and excellent and very genuine copy. With stamps likely a bookseller's to head of cover and title page 'Rodi-Ferrario'. Very rare first and only edition of this travel guide to Europe written as the title suggests for young readers in a pocket 12mo format. The guide moves from tours of Italy and Switzerland all the way to Poland Lithuania and Turkey as well as Great Britain providing 8 engraved plates of national costumes along the way. The charming illustrations depict: a young woman of 'Batz' Bath; a woman of Civita-Vechia Romagna; a citizen of Seville; a young woman of Gaeta Two Sicilies; a boatman from Le Havre a woman of Oberhash Switzerland; the Vizier of Constantinople; and finally a female Athenian. The commentary passes from the historical to contemporary details of travel between major destinations and occasional remarks of art-historical interest. Florence is noted to contain in the same breath the sepulcres of Galileo Aretino Machiavelli and Alfieri the latter having been sculpted by Canova p 72. England Scotland and Ireland are noted very much in passing: although the empire stretches 'to the Ganges' the islands themselves are accorded little interest. The guide does mention "the reknown of the univeristy of Oxford the most learned in England" with no mention however of its more easterly counterpart.
