1939GAM049Faber London 1939 1939. Book. Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. The Faber re-issue of this Shell Guide published three years after the original Architectural Press edition. A bookplate to the front pastedown states that this copy was bequeathed to the Library of the Royal Empire Society by Flying-Officer R.T.E.Latham August 1944 and two ink stamps confirm that it was subsequently withdrawn from stock. These two stamps plus two neatly inked sets of numerals one to the front pastedown and one to the index page are the only indications of former library ownership. Small 4to. 54pp. Original white publishers cloth with internal wire spiral binding blocked in blue at the spine. Illustrated with four colour maps and thirty-eight photographs. Some staining to the cloth at head of the upper and lower boards and half a dozen small spots of foxing to the backstrip spine. Internally a very crisp and bright copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper which is a little dust soiled and chafed with a little creased to the top edge and a single tiny area of loss. A touch of spotting to cloth and top edge and a tiny scuff to the head of the half-title which serves as the free endpaper and also exhibits a little light spotting. A very good copy in the scare non-price-clipped dust wrapper featuring a Nineteenth century engraving of the interior of Gloucester Cathedral just a little tanned spotted and chafed with several tiny slivers of loss. Cloth a little discoloured from handling and with some unsightly water-staining to base of upper and lower boards also affecting the pastedowns endpapers and a tiny portion of the base of the title page although the remainder of the leaves are spared. Water-staining aside this is a nice bright copy of an uncommon Shell Guide complete with non-price-clipped dust wrapper depicting a 19th century engraving of the interior of Gloucester Cathedral dust marked chipped with some loss to head and base of spine panel and tips of several corners and with evidence of water-staining. This unfortunate staining aside this is quite a crisp copy of one of the scarcest titles in the series. Faber, London Hardcover

With photographic endpapers two colour maps and scores of photographs and reproductions many presented full-page or double-spread plus essays by Sheila Kaye-Smith Rev. Miles Sargent the Dean of Rochester and Arthur Waugh on Charles Dickens and Kent. Includes a full-page Edward Bawden Shell advertisement. Top edge lightly spotted and with a minor wave to the paperstock. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper nicked at the upper edge with several tiny fractions of loss with two or three short edge-creases and a little toning to the spine panel. The Faber re-issue of the eleventh title in the series and the only one written by Piper alone Faber acquired series shortly before the publication of the thirteenth title and reissued the entire run up to that point between March and April 1939. Small 4to. 44pp iv colour maps. White cloth with an internal wire spiral binding. Photographic endpapers and with sixteen pink-tinted leaves of photographs and further monochrome photographs throughout including several by the author and one by his father Sir Muirhead Bone. Spine ends bumped and two small indentations to the upper board. A touch of rusting to the spiral binding resulting in just a trace of offsetting to the front endpapers. Neat former owner name inked to a blank preliminary leaf. A very crisp and pleasing copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper correspondingly bumped at spine ends resulting in several short but ragged tears and a little further chafing to corner tips.
