Cream-coloured front end-paper is printed with a list of guide books and clean except for an Egyptian travel agent's stamp the rear end-paper is a general map of Italy. Name on half-title. Small corner missing from creased title page and tear on p. xxv. Marbled page edges faded and two page markers one red and one green also faded at exposed ends. Illustrated with 28 maps 62 plans and diagrams and the Arms of the Popes. Frontis map torn but complete large three-strip plan of Rome in appendix loosely enclosed. The dust-jacket though worn is of interest since it is an uncommon survival. Ticket to enter Catacombs and leaflet on Cemetery of the Capuchin Fathers loosely enclosed. This edition was the first to be issued after 1909 so it includes many post First World War changes as well as the establishment of Vatican City. The text notes the presence of a Fascist Militia the lack of a 'free' press and includes the understatement that <em>'The traveller should refrain from airing his political views.' </em>p. xxix.</p> Karl Baedeker.

Fine in red cloth covered over limp boards with gilt text stamping on the spine and on the front board with a prior owner's name and address written on the first free end paper. Due to the protection offered by the dust jacket described below the boards still have their original brightness and sheen. In a good dust jacket with a 1/2" deep triangular chip to the lower edge of the spine area and minor chips to the folds to the front flap. The multi-colored fold-out map of "Rheinprovianz und Nassau" which precedes the title page is in place and is in excellent condition. There are 52 maps and 29 plans which illustrate this volume. Fifth edition. xlviii 392 pp 12 lithographed views including frontispieceone folding map of the Rhine 8 engraved plans all pages and plans browned as is usual; restored preserving most of the publisher's original yellow pictorial Biedermeier boards; a very good copy.<br /> The "Rheinlande" was one of the longest series published by Baedeker and had its origins in the modest "Rheinreise" written by Professor Klein and published by Röhling in 1828. The title eventually changed to "Rheinlande" in 1854. These Biedermeier boards were only used by Baedeker during the 1840's and the early part of the 1850's. <br /><br />This is the last edition with Profesor Klein's name is still printed on the title-page.
