Interesting letter from the famous French explorer Hyacinthe de Bougainville to Baroness Hyde de Neuville died 1849 the wife of Baron Jean-Guillaume Hyde de Neuville 1776 - 1857 French aristocrat diplomat and politician.In this letter Bougainville refers to an earlier visit with the Baroness on his vessel La Seine which he commanded from 1819-21 and a meeting he had with her and her husband in Washington. He also asks whether she can arrange a new meeting between him and her husband. Small hole in margin not affecting text. In fine condition. 12 pp. caption-title; tipped into a modern binding of quarter linen and boards. <p><p>The renowned French zoologist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire on the platypus: an important study read to the Académie des Sciences and set up in print for publication in the appropriate learned journal. This is a very rare separate offprint paginated 1 to 8 for separate issue rather than simply being clipped from its journal version.</p> <p>Saint-Hilaire here discusses research into the platypus made possible by the delivery of a brace of the monotremes by Hyacinthe de Bougainville commander of the Thétis expedition just returned to Paris from the southern ocean. He discusses work by Shaw in England reports by Péron from the Baudin expedition and work by other eminent naturalists in Europe. The second half of the text is the most controversial occupied by vigorous debate about ideas promulgated by the German naturalist Meckel in his ground-breaking Ornithorhynchi Paradoxi published just weeks previously. Meckel's first full separate study of the animal concentrated on the animal's reproductive system and especially the mammary glands of the female. Saint-Hilaire objected strenuously to this approach asserting that the relevant glands were in fact odoriferous and designed only to attract a mate. Saint-Hilaire was of course plain wrong but that didn't become clear for decades. Meanwhile in the furious debates about the classification of the platypus of the 1820s and 1830s Saint-Hilaire occupied centre-stage. Some years ago we handled the sale of a collection of his manuscript drafts and notes on the subject which showed just how controversial the whole subject became.</p> <p>It was Saint-Hilaire himself who had coined the term "Monotremata" as early as 1803. He had been appointed professor of quadrupeds cetaceans birds reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the young age of twenty-one. He travelled with Napoleon's campaign to Egypt but it was his long study of the museum's mammalian collection that made him famous and led to comparisons with Cuvier although the two men fell out in 1829. During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus stubbornly holding that it must be a vertebrate and refusing to believe that it could possibly be a mammal.</p> </p> . Single-page letter on single folded sheet 255 x 195 mm. address panel slightly torn where originally opened at red wax seal; very good. <p><p>An intriguing letter sent from on board Hyacinthe de Bougainville's command the Thétis to Monsieur Bajot who is noted as being the editor of the Annales Maritimes published by the Ministry of the Marine in Paris. Louis-Marie Bajot was associated with the Ministry for most of his life and was the driving force behind the publication of the Annales Maritimes an important annual that published the latest news of naval affairs and regulations together with long articles and notes on voyages and other maritime matters. </p> <p>The naval officer André-Antoine-Émilien Gay baron de Taradel writes that though he is a subscriber he finds that he is missing the recent volumes; he has just embarked on the Thétis and expects to sail shortly just at the moment when he might conceivably profit from having the volumes to hand. The Annales Maritimes first published in 1816 published all manner of notes and articles on all manner of questions relating to navigation including references to the Baudin and Freycinet voyages. Bougainville and the Thétis did sail in July 1822 to Martinique to trial the vessel but did not sail on the circumnavigation until 1824 including making a long stay at Sydney.</p> </p> . unknown

Hyacinthe Bougainville 1781-1846 was a French naval officer son of the famous French Admiral and explorer Louis-Antoine Comte de Bougainville 1729-1811 who had circumnavigated the world in 1766-1779. Hyacinthe sailed around the world from 1824-1826 on board of the Thétis and the Espérance sent by the Minister of the Navy and the Colonies the Duc de Clermont-Tonnerre. It was virtually a diplomatic mission to Réunion Cochin-China Pondicherry in the Indian Ocean Manila and Macao. Hyacinthe returned across the Pacific and after anchoring at Port Jackson for three months he returned to France via Rio de Janeiro. Hyacinthe de Bougainville became Rear-Admiral in 1838.Ad 1: Autograph letter signed by Hyacinthe de Bougainville to Gaspar baron Gourgaud. Hyacinthe complained that he had heard nothing from him since their last "réunion gastronomique" 16 days earlier.Ad 2: Autograph letter signed by Hyacinthe de Bougainville to Madame Delpeche. She was the widow of François Delpeche an engraver who made a portrait of Hyacinthe's father Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1837.Ad 3: Autograph letter signed by Hyacinthe de Bougainville to a "Cher ami". He wrote that he had been presented by the Minister with some others that he didn't know to the King as an option for being made a contre admiral = Rear Admiral. "I am at the head of the list and if I stick to my titles I will be without worry ". He invokes his deeds since 1830 and says that he wants to retire "if I am not done justice; the name I bear does not allow me to serve any longer as a stepping stone for others". Three days before he was told that "le travail" was presented to the King and indeed his appointment followed the same year.Ad 4: Autograph letter signed by Hyacinthe de Bougainville to a "Cher ami" and his best "comrade". De Bougainville asks him a favour regarding the son-in-law of his "second" on the Thétis during his voyage around the globe in 1824-1826.All four letters with faint folding lines and pencil annotations; ads 2 and 4 with glue residue on the last leaf ad 2 with the remnants of a seal and a slight defect to the top corner of the last leaf where the letter was sealed and reopened. Varying degrees of foxing to atlas plates. Very good. First edition of the official record of Bougainville's voyage around the world. Hyacinthe de Bougainville son of Louis de Bougainville sailed as an ensign at the age of eighteen on the Baudin voyage. His own expedition of 1826 has continued to be overshadowed by such circumnavigators as Dumont d'Urville. After distinguished service in the Napoleonic Wars Bougainville was promoted to post-captain and given command of the Thétis. She was only the second French frigate to be commissioned for a circumnavigation the first having been his father's vessel the Boudeuse. <br> <br> The voyage took twenty-eight months visiting Pondicherry Manila Macao Surabaya Sydney a stay of almost three months Valparaiso and Rio among other places. Bougainville returned to France with a fine collection of natural history specimens and the official account of the voyage was handsomely published after a delay of some eleven years. The major purpose of the expedition was political and strategic and Bougainville's first report of 1826 gave the French government a survey of colonial possessions in Asia and of the military strength of Manila as well as accounts of Singapore the Australian colonies and Spanish America. He spent several months in and around Sydney where he collected considerable ornithological material. This ultimately resulted in three drawings by Bessa of four species of birds including superb illustrations of the male and female Gang-gang or red-crested parrot. <br> <br> From here both ships crossed to Valparaiso where la Touanne commenced his overland journey to rejoin the expedition at Rio. The account of this journey takes up much of the second volume together with René Primevère Lesson's account of the natural history. Bougainville's advice was taken into account in the development of French strategy and diplomacy in the Pacific during the 19th century. <br> <br> The rare atlas volume includes thirty-four lithographed views and portraits after Adam Sabatier and others from sketches by de la Touanne printed by Bernard & Frey; twelve handcolored engraved natural history plates after Bessa and Pretre by Coutant Legrand Oudet Dumenil and Massard; an excellent double-page handcolored aquatint of various native vessels; a folding engraved world map; two double-page coastal profiles and six double-page engraved maps and charts by Tardieu after de la Touanne. <br> <br> A handsome copy of a historically underappreciated circumnavigation. The two ships involved in this expedition were the frigate Thétis commanded by Hyacinthe de Bougainville leader of the expedition and the corvette Espérance under the command of Paul de Nourquer du Camper. The first volume contains a complete account of the voyage from the departure from Brest on March 2 1824 to the return to the same port on June 24 1826. It also includes the official instructions issued to Bougainville and the list of officers comprising the expedition staff p. 25. The second volume recounts the overland journey from Valparaíso to Buenos Aires made by Edmond de La Touanne across the Andes and the Pampas followed by his commentary on the historical plates the natural history section by Lesson and the astronomical and meteorological observations. The son of the renowned navigator and explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville Hyacinthe de Bougainville was born in Brest in 1781. A graduate of the École Polytechnique he joined the navy took part in the Baudin expedition to the Pacific 18001803 and served on Bruix's staff. He was appointed frigate captain in 1811 and commanded the Cérès being captured in 1814 by two British ships. Promoted to ship's captain in August 1821 he led from 1824 to 1826 aboard the Thétis and the Espérance a circumnavigation that took him to the Philippines Macao Tourane Singapore Surabaya and Sydney from which he brought back valuable political strategic and commercial intelligence.
