This voyage became famous for being the first expedition to make records of the Falkland Islands and other islands near Papua New Guinea. The two-ship expedition which began in 1766 spent much time in Tahiti and Samoa gaining information on the local tribes and much of what we know now of these peoples is attributed to Bougainville and his expedition. 17734504180Neuchâtel: Société Thypographique sic 1773. In fine original condition. Two volumes in one small octavo; a fine copy in an attractive contemporary binding of marbled calf sides bordered in gilt the flat spine ornately gilt with a repeating drawer-handle design.

A most attractive copy of the Neuchâtel version of the official account of the Bougainville voyage based on the first French edition of 1771. This was the first official French circumnavigation and in many ways the most consequential of all the many French voyages into the Pacific commemorated on today's maps by a multitude of geographical names. Bougainville's description of his travels in the Pacific created enormous interest in France and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.

Bougainville's expedition passed through the Straits of Magellan in January 1768. After some time looking for the mythical "Davis Land" said to be off the Chilean coast they started on a direct route across the Pacific. They discovered the Tuamotus sighted Tahiti in April then visited Samoa sailed through Melanesia sighted the Great Barrier Reef and passed through the Solomons and New Britain to Batavia.

Bougainville not knowing of Wallis's stop there a year earlier thought that he had discovered Tahiti and his lengthy account of the island group is an interesting counterpart to Wallis's account. The vocabulary of 300 words that he prints is the first such vocabulary to appear of any Polynesian language.

Unillustrated this edition is in a much smaller format than the first edition; the addition referred to in the title is a new 22-page dictionary of nautical terms. This version proved popular and was reprinted several times at Neuchâtel. It is quite scarce today: there is no copy in the catalogue of the Hill Collection.

. 18264102423Paris: Annales des Sciences Naturelles 1826. In fine condition. 12 pp. caption-title; tipped into a modern binding of quarter linen and boards.

The renowned French zoologist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire on the platypus: an important study read to the Académie des Sciences and set up in print for publication in the appropriate learned journal. This is a very rare separate offprint paginated 1 to 8 for separate issue rather than simply being clipped from its journal version.

Saint-Hilaire here discusses research into the platypus made possible by the delivery of a brace of the monotremes by Hyacinthe de Bougainville commander of the Thétis expedition just returned to Paris from the southern ocean. He discusses work by Shaw in England reports by Péron from the Baudin expedition and work by other eminent naturalists in Europe. The second half of the text is the most controversial occupied by vigorous debate about ideas promulgated by the German naturalist Meckel in his ground-breaking Ornithorhynchi Paradoxi published just weeks previously. Meckel's first full separate study of the animal concentrated on the animal's reproductive system and especially the mammary glands of the female. Saint-Hilaire objected strenuously to this approach asserting that the relevant glands were in fact odoriferous and designed only to attract a mate. Saint-Hilaire was of course plain wrong but that didn't become clear for decades. Meanwhile in the furious debates about the classification of the platypus of the 1820s and 1830s Saint-Hilaire occupied centre-stage. Some years ago we handled the sale of a collection of his manuscript drafts and notes on the subject which showed just how controversial the whole subject became.

It was Saint-Hilaire himself who had coined the term "Monotremata" as early as 1803. He had been appointed professor of quadrupeds cetaceans birds reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the young age of twenty-one. He travelled with Napoleon's campaign to Egypt but it was his long study of the museum's mammalian collection that made him famous and led to comparisons with Cuvier although the two men fell out in 1829. During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus stubbornly holding that it must be a vertebrate and refusing to believe that it could possibly be a mammal.

. Single-page letter on single folded sheet 255 x 195 mm. address panel slightly torn where originally opened at red wax seal; very good.

An intriguing letter sent from on board Hyacinthe de Bougainville's command the Thétis to Monsieur Bajot who is noted as being the editor of the Annales Maritimes published by the Ministry of the Marine in Paris. Louis-Marie Bajot was associated with the Ministry for most of his life and was the driving force behind the publication of the Annales Maritimes an important annual that published the latest news of naval affairs and regulations together with long articles and notes on voyages and other maritime matters.

The naval officer André-Antoine-Émilien Gay baron de Taradel writes that though he is a subscriber he finds that he is missing the recent volumes; he has just embarked on the Thétis and expects to sail shortly just at the moment when he might conceivably profit from having the volumes to hand. The Annales Maritimes first published in 1816 published all manner of notes and articles on all manner of questions relating to navigation including references to the Baudin and Freycinet voyages. Bougainville and the Thétis did sail in July 1822 to Martinique to trial the vessel but did not sail on the circumnavigation until 1824 including making a long stay at Sydney.

. unknown

29401Manuscript in brown ink folio 1 page; headed 'Rade de Macao ce 1er Janvier 1825' the letter is to an unnamed recipient and concerns the Lazarist missionary Lamiot; old vertical and horizontal folds minor tears at the ends roughened at top and bottom edges else clean and complete with red wax seals preserved. Rare unpublished letter of Baron Hyacinthe de Bougainville 1781-1846 written at Macao aboard the corvette Thétis during its circumnavigation of 1824-26. Baron de Bougainville was the son of the navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville 1729-1811. Earlier on in his naval career he had taken part in the Baudin expedition to New Holland of 1800-1803. In the years 1824-26 he led a diplomatic mission to East Asia on a round the world expedition with the warships Thétis and Espérance. His ships set sail from France in March 1824 and visited Réunion Pondicherry Manila Macao Cochin-China and Soerabaia. On his return voyage across the Pacific - retracing in part his father's famous circumnavigation of 1766-1769 - he called in at Port Jackson for three months during 1825. Whilst in Sydney he erected monuments to La Pérouse and Receveur at Botany Bay. Bougainville's letter written at anchor off Macao concerns the Lazarist missionary Louis-François Lamiot 1767-1831 superior of the Vincentians in China. Having first arrived in Peking in 1794 for many years Lamiot had acted as court interpreter until in 1820 he was banished from the empire owing to his association with the disgraced Father Clet. He was living in exile at Macao at the time of the arrival of the Thétis and Espérance at the end of 1824. Bougainville writes: 'Lamiot having received the order to return to France after serving the Emperor in Peking for 26 years presented himself to be admitted on the King's frigate that I command'. Bougainville however acting on the advice of the king and of the Vicomte de Chateaubriand writes that he has refused to take Lamiot on board his ship: Lamiot is ordered to return to Peking to attempt to administer the French mission there as best he can. He states: 'I would be all the more reprehensible in the eyes of the King of France if I granted M. Lamiot the passage he is asking for' since Lamiot is currently in a position to offer his services to the Emperor of China as a tutor for young mathematicians. The French mission was as much a scientific enterprise as it was an apostolic one. Contrary to the King of France's wishes however Father Lamiot would remain in Macao until his death in 1831. Bougainville signs the letter with his title: 'The Ship's Captain Commanding a Division of the naval forces of his Majesty the King of France in the seas of Asia. H. Baron de Bougainville'. While Bougainville's brief communiqué is undoubtedly a piece of official correspondence containing information of a diplomatically sensitive nature it is not clear for whom precisely it was intended; nor can we be absolutely certain whether it was carried by him back to France or delivered to an unknown party en route. Immediately after leaving Macao Bougainville's ships called at Da Nang where the French were treated civilly for several weeks in January-February 1825 but were refused an audience with the Emperor Minh Mạng. The expedition then visited Soerabaia Sydney Valparaíso and Rio de Janeiro before returning to France. unknown

The purpose of this expedition was to explore the Pacific especially the Australian coast and New Guinea to examine the geographical and ecological conditions for economic benefit and to extend the influence of the French crown by seizing land. From an economic point of view the journey was not very successful but in Europe the description of Tahiti shaped the image of the island as a paradise where people seem to live free of constraints. Louis de Bougainville had been aide-de-camp to Montcalm in Canada and acted for the French at their surrender at Montreal in 1760. A chapter of this work is devoted to the natural history of the Falkland Islands. "During this voyage Bougainville visited Rio de Janeiro Notevideo and Patagonia in South America; he was also in Buenos Aires when the order for the expulsion of the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived which he describes in detail. He then proceeded through the Strait of Magellan and across the Pacific visiting the Tuamotu Archipelago Tahiti the Samoa Islands the New Hebrides and the Salomon Louisiade and New Britain archipelagos. There is a long description of Tahiti containing observations on the natives as wel as a vocabulary of 300 words used on the island"--Hill. Bougainville's voyage created a great deal of interest among the French in the Pacific which resulted in the voyages of du Fresne and de La Perouse. The flowering vine is named for him as well as the largest island in the Solomons. He later took part in the American Revolution survived the French revolution and was made a senator and count by Napoleon. unknown
