First and only edition of a richly illustrated work on the French circumnavigation of the world under command of Baron de Bougainville 1781-1846 son of the great explorer Louis de Bougainville. The goal of the voyage was to extend France's influence in Indochina. However Bougainville also visited Pondicherry Manila Macao Surabaya Sydney Port Jackson Valparaiso and Rio de Janeiro. He brought back a collection of natural history specimens from his expedition which was described as one of the most precious and important that had been seen in France. After distinguished service in the Napoleonic Wars Bougainville was promoted to post-captain and given command of the Thétis. She was only the second French frigate to be commissioned for a circumnavigation the first having been his father's vessel the Boudeuse. The voyage took twenty-eight months and the official account was published after a delay of some eleven years. The major purpose of the expedition was political and strategic and Bougainville's first report of 1826 gave the French government a survey of colonial possessions in Asia and of the military strength of Manila as well as accounts of Singapore the Australian colonies and Spanish America. Bougainville's advice was taken into account in the development of French strategy and diplomacy in the Pacific during the 19th century. He also spent several months in and around Sydney where he collected considerable ornithological material. This ultimately resulted in three drawings by Bessa of four species of birds including superb illustrations of the male and female Gang-gang or red-crested parrot. The text contains an account of the voyage. The gorgeously coloured engraved plates show plants and animals including a curious case of Siamese twins a bat an Australian kangaroo a chameleon a "Gymnodactile Phyllure" a fine plate with butterflies and two plates of indigenous plants. The main intention of the voyage was political: to extend French influence in Indochina. However Bougainville also touched at Pondicherry Manila Macao Surabaya Sydney Port Jackson Valparaiso and Rio de Janeiro. Bougainville son of the explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville had served as an eighteen-year-old ensign on the Baudin voyage and after distinguished service in the Napoleonic wars he was given command of the frigate La Thetis and the corvette L'Esprance. He spent several months in and around Sydney where most of the ornithological material gathered by the voyage had been collected here and resulted in three drawings by Bessa of four species of birds including 'superb illustrations' Wood of the male and female Gang-gang or red-crested parrot. From here both ships crossed to Valparaiso where La Touanne commenced his overland journey to rejoin the expedition at Rio. 1771166666Paris: Saillant & Nyon 1771. A wealth of scientific and geographical detail about the Pacific Ocean First edition of this account of the first French circumnavigation. Bougainville travelled to the Falkland Islands in 1766 to formally deliver the French settlement to Spain continuing into the Pacific and around the world. The clandestine passenger Jeanne Baret disguised as a man became the first woman on record to have circumnavigated the globe. Louis Antoine de Bougainville 1729-1811 studied law but abandoned it to join the army as a musketeer in 1753 serving in the Seven Years War. He was later appointed commander of the frigate La Boudeuse and the transport L'Étoile setting sail in December 1766. He entered the Pacific in 1768 and landed on Tahiti claiming it for France unaware of the visit of Samuel Wallis nine months earlier. On Tahiti it was discovered that the botanist's valet was a woman Jeanne Baret who enlisted as Jean Baret. The ships continued due west through Samoa and the New Hebrides eventually making the first recorded European sighting of the Great Barrier Reef. Turning north 100 miles from the coast of Queensland he passed through New Guinea to the Solomon Islands proceeding thence to the Moluccas where the Dutch allowed him to refit. Bougainville carried on to Djakarta and Mauritius and then home to St Malo. He was in Buenos Aires when the order of the expulsion of the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived which he describes in detail. Bougainville's name is given to the largest member of the Solomon Islands and to the strait which divides it from the British Island of Choiseul. It is also applied to the strait between Mallicollo and Espiritu Santo Islands of the New Hebrides group as well as to the South American climbing plant Bougainvillea. The book is notable for the influential description of Tahiti which Bougainville christened New Cythera after the abode of Aphrodite. "It is difficult to overstate the importance of the discovery of Tahiti on the European imagination of the context of utopian projections seemingly becoming real. Tahiti rapidly permeated European mythology" Arthur p. 82. His description of Tahiti and other South Sea islands also includes a 300-word vocabulary. Bougainville's account of the Tahitians followed the lead of thinkers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau who was "popularizing the idea of the natural man in Europe. Denis Diderot inspired by Bougainville drew upon Rousseu's ideal of a natural state of humanity in his Supplement au voyage de Bougainville a work that can be understood as a commentary on colonialism" ibid. p. 82. The purpose of this expedition was to explore the Pacific especially the Australian coast and New Guinea to examine the geographical and ecological conditions for economic benefit and to extend the influence of the French crown by seizing land. From an economic point of view the journey was not very successful but in Europe the description of Tahiti shaped the image of the island as a paradise where people seem to live free of constraints. Bouganville's travelogue became a bestseller that spread throughout Europe and the myth of the South Seas continues to inspire philosophers artists and writers to this day.
Saillant & Nyon hardcover

17734504180Neuchâtel: Société Thypographique sic 1773. In fine original condition. Two volumes in one small octavo; a fine copy in an attractive contemporary binding of marbled calf sides bordered in gilt the flat spine ornately gilt with a repeating drawer-handle design.

A most attractive copy of the Neuchâtel version of the official account of the Bougainville voyage based on the first French edition of 1771. This was the first official French circumnavigation and in many ways the most consequential of all the many French voyages into the Pacific commemorated on today's maps by a multitude of geographical names. Bougainville's description of his travels in the Pacific created enormous interest in France and was largely responsible for building up the romantic vision of a South Sea paradise where Rousseau's noble savage lived in a state of blissful innocence.

Bougainville's expedition passed through the Straits of Magellan in January 1768. After some time looking for the mythical "Davis Land" said to be off the Chilean coast they started on a direct route across the Pacific. They discovered the Tuamotus sighted Tahiti in April then visited Samoa sailed through Melanesia sighted the Great Barrier Reef and passed through the Solomons and New Britain to Batavia.

Bougainville not knowing of Wallis's stop there a year earlier thought that he had discovered Tahiti and his lengthy account of the island group is an interesting counterpart to Wallis's account. The vocabulary of 300 words that he prints is the first such vocabulary to appear of any Polynesian language.

Unillustrated this edition is in a much smaller format than the first edition; the addition referred to in the title is a new 22-page dictionary of nautical terms. This version proved popular and was reprinted several times at Neuchâtel. It is quite scarce today: there is no copy in the catalogue of the Hill Collection.

. "During this voyage Bougainville visited Rio de Janeiro Notevideo and Patagonia in South America; he was also in Buenos Aires when the order for the expulsion of the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived which he describes in detail.
