The emigrant ship 'Roman Emperor' brought migrants to Sydney Australia and Lyttleton New Zealand and sailed a number of times in the 1850s and 1860s under Captain Champion who signed this document. The ship is recorded as sailing to the Australian Colonies in 1850 dispatched by ship brokers Marshall and Edridge and weighing 793 tons.<br /> <br /> This is a single half sheet letter of recommendation for a William Struthers who sailed as second officer on one of these voyages from London to Sydney via India and back. The National Library of Australia holds the diary of a Mr. Harry Woolley who was a passenger on that voyage. 7 5/8 x 6 1/4". Blue laid paper contemporary folds. unknown

187723994Dublin: The Central Tenants' Defense Committee 1877. First printing. Hardcover. Good overall. The trial of returned convict John Sarsfield Casey an activist defender of Irish tenant farmers who earlier in his career wrote letters to Fenian newspapers as 'The Galtee Boy' which were used in his 1865 trial to support a charge of treason and a sentence of transportation to Australia. Casey was one of the 62 Fenians transported to Western Australia. He was granted a free pardon in 1869 and returned to Dublin in 1870.<br /> <br /> The 1877 trial recorded here was brought against Casey in Ireland by the agent for a wealthy land owner Nathaniel Buckley named Patten Smith Bridge. <br /> <br /> Bridge had imposed enormous rent increases on the Galtee Mountain tenant farmers; he alleged that Casey's articles to the press about the excessive rent increases had libeled him. Huge rents increases and the inability of farmers to pay resulted in whole families being thrown out of their homes; Casey knew these facts from personal experience as some of these tenants were his relatives. The trial lasted 8 days; Bridge's claim for damages against Casey was repudiated.<br /> <br /> 8vo vii 98pp. Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library with their stamp on the title page. Very mild spine slant rubbing to extremities; internals clean and sound. Lady Brassey was a skilled photographer and botanist and also had an interest in medicine. She and her husband a Member of Parliament and accomplished sailor traveled extensively on their yacht "Sunbeam" and Annie's lively books about their adventures found an eager audience. This book published after she died of malaria at age 48 recounts travels in India Sri Lanka Indonesia Malaysia and Australia. Longmans, Green hardcover books

Good. - Letter penned in black ink in an unknown hand & filling both sides of a sheet of black-bordered letterhead approximately 7 inches high by 4-3/8 widr with the address of his family seat printed in raised lettering at the top. Signed "Brassey". The black border most probably references the death of his wife Lady Anna Brassey seven months prior. There is a small light stain below the salutation with a glue mark down the right margin of the verso where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Good. <p>Brassey writes to thank the Rev. J. R. Boyer for sending him the children's book "Davie Blake the Sailor": "It is as you say a work very much to the sailor's taste and is calculated to do much good by drawing attention to those vices and follies which we all deplore."<p>Thomas Brassey 1st Earl of Brassey 1836-1918 was a British Llberal Party politician Governor of Victoria Australia and enthusiastic yachtsman. His first experience of sailing was while he was still in school at Rugby. He owned a succession of yachts and between July 1876 and May 1877 circumnavigated the world in his steam-assisted three-masted topsail-yard schooner Sunbeam. We are satisfied that the exploration of Australia will only be profitably accomplished by the employment of these animals'.
