Timmann at the 'Pioneer' Office 1890 and 1891. Octavo 13 issues bound in one volume 148 pages continuous pagination plus the large folding supplement to Number 10 March 7 1891 a broadside 455 × 335 mm with illustrations. Contemporary flush-cut quarter leather and stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; neat repairs to the leather at the head and foot of the spine; acidic newsprint used for the last two numbers uniformly tanned; overall in excellent condition. The recto of the large folding supplement to Number 10 contains the text with three line illustrations of an article that 'appeared originally in the "SA Register" in six short letters': 'Protection or Freedom Our Manufactories Our People and Our Land Values'. The verso of the broadside is devoted entirely to advertisements some illustrated with large engravings. The final issue of the journal was Volume 5 Number 5 24 December 1892. Although the Single Tax League of South Australia figures prominently throughout a notice printed at the foot of the last page of the first issue suggests the journal had a broader platform. 'The publication of "The Pioneer" is undertaken solely with a view to stimulate thought and promote discussion and if approved of it is hoped will find the ready support of all Friends of Reform. The labor involved is given voluntarily and gratuitously; any profits made will go entirely towards extending its range of operations.' The journal ran for 57 issues ceasing publication with Volume V Number 5 24 December 1892. Provenance: Arthur W. This progress report contains the detailed answers to 1832 questions: two of them should suffice . '672: What was Coates's conduct towards the other patients - Very irritating; he argued with them on religious matters and he was very nearly killed by one patient for calling the Virgin Mary a wh--e. 673: You have no doubt he was insane - I think he must have been insane when he made that remark'. Small octavo xii 80 568 66 'Handbook Advertiser 1880-81' pages plus 11 maps and plans 9 folding a rear endpaper map and a large folding map in a rear end-pocket. Gilt-lettered red cloth a little marked and flecked and a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities; trifling signs of use and age; the end-pocket map has minimal siverfish nibbling along small sections of one fold; a very good copy. Provenance: 'given me from "Manoah" Library' is written in ink on the verso of the front flyleaf; a bookplate 'Words Words Words F A S' is mounted on the front pastedown. 'Manoah' was the name of the Adelaide Hills estate of Sir Josiah Symon 1846-1934; 'F A S' may be a Symon family member. Sir Josiah Symon 'was born in Scotland and migrated to South Australia in 1866. He was called to the South Australian Bar in 1871 and became Attorney-General in a conservative government when he won the state seat of Sturt in 1881. Sir Josiah was the acknowledged leader of the South Australian Bar for over 30 years through his understanding of the law and skill as an advocate. His major contribution to Australian politics was in the area of Federation. He was a prominent member of the 1897-98 Australasian Federal Convention. He saw the major issues of Federation as equal representation of the states in the Senate; the solution of deadlocks between the two Houses of Parliament; the Murray River; and the establishment of an Australian Supreme Court to replace the Privy Council. The first three issues are still topical today the fourth was resolved several years ago. Sir Josiah was a person of broad scholarship. He wrote "Shakespeare the Englishman" in 1929 and was a member of several literary associations. The library at Sir Josiah's Upper Sturt estate "Manoah" consisted of 10000 law and literature volumes reflecting his interests in Shakespeare travel history and biography. He bequeathed his collection excluding approximately 2500 law books to the State Library where it remains an excellent example of a "gentleman's library". The terms of the bequest were that the books should not be marked or rebound which makes it a useful source of examples of original bindings particularly in pictorial cloth' State Library of South Australia website. Full brown morocco with a gilt-edged red morocco onlay in the shape of a cross on the front cover; spine compartments and sides bordered in blind; all edges gilt; covers a little rubbed and marked; spine a little sunned; a very good copy. A deluxe edition of Keble's influential collection of poems extra-illustrated with 13 original photographs of important religious paintings. This copy comes from the collection of South Australian pastoralist Henry Dutton 1844-1914 and contains an additional albumen paper photograph portrait of him mounted on the recto of the frontispiece. A calligraphic inscription in red and black on an early blank reads: 'An Offering to Henry Dutton from the Chorister Boys of Christ Church North Adelaide October 1871'. Original publisher's cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; expert conservation to the cloth on the spine and front panel with the original cloth a little marked and slightly worn along the bottom edges of the boards; front hinge cracked but firm; endpapers tanned with a few minor blemishes; a very good copy internally near-fine. A presentation copy with the front free endpaper inscribed to 'Mr F.A. Joyner With Editor's compliments Albert Molineux'. The journal commenced publication in August 1875 and continued until June 1940; at this stage it was still being compiled by the founder Albert Molineux 1832-1909 farmer editor and promoter of agriculture. <p>Provenance: Frederick Allen Joyner 1863-1945 an Adelaide solicitor photographer and plant breeder. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' has information on both these interesting men. A. A fascinating retrospective account of Townsend aka Waxend and his 'delightful spreadeagling' appeared in the Adelaide newspaper 'The Register' on Saturday 11 April 1914. The article includes the full text of this 'Address to the Electors of Onkaparinga' in 1857. Some years later he released an 'Address to the Electors of Sturt'; apart from the change of place-name it is identical in content to this item. W.K. Original dark green cloth decorated in black on the front and rear boards and decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine; cloth lightly flecked; a fine copy. An early collected reprint of works already scarce at the time of publication; the lengthy 34-page introduction by Woods is new to this edition. This is a variant edition as issued we purchased several copies some years ago from the publisher's archive; it does not contain the eight tinted lithographs normally found in this collected reprint. These plates were new to the reprint. <p>Not commonly known is that Taplin's substantial contribution 'The Narrinyeri' 156 pages plus 6 preliminaries is the text of the revised edition of 1878 see his informative preface dated 12 April 1878 at page xliii. The Wyatt contribution was not previously published as such; the text here was 'principally extracted from his official reports' stemming from his relatively short and unhappy time as the third South Australian Protector of the Aborigines from 1837 to 1839 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The contributions by Meyer Schuermann Gason and Bennett first appeared in 1846 1846 1874 and 1869 respectively. Ferguson 13095 noting variant bindings but not noting this unillustrated edition. E.S. Circular providing information to those emigrating to Australia with an Addendum inserted at the front listing important changes in eligibility requirements recently imposed by the Agent General for New South Wales. <br /> <br /> The addendum states the changes which will take effect following June 1 1881: "Emigrants will be required to pay a moiety of the passage money. Only married couples not exceeding 35 with our without children and single women will be eligible." The circular provides descriptions of New South Wales resources including gold mining: "The Government is empowered to proclaim Crown lands to be gold fields and to grant what are called "miners' rights on the payment of a small fee which enables any person to search or dig for gold. Leases of auriferous tracts of alluvial ground . for limited periods may be granted at annual rents under special conditions as regards labour and machinery". Early hand colored copper engraving of Sydney with Aborigines tending a fire at the left foreground tents on the shore in the middle ground and the harbor with many sailing ships and the city in the distance. <br /> <br /> With the text sheet in both German and French which describes Sydney as a place of exile for English criminals: "Elle Sydney sert en meme tems sic de lieu d'exil pour les criminelles anglais qu'on y transporte et que l'on applique aux ouvrages publics sic jusqu'a ce qu'ils aient subi leurs peines." At the top of the text sheet "Melanges CXCV Vol VIII No. 48". <br /> <br /> Text sheet with a bit of fox spotting; the upper corner with 3/4" crescent torn away not affecting text. As well as touching on colonial politics it also addresses the issue of Aboriginal people. The author is now best known for his early novel of colonial South Australia ' Paving the Way' but was a notable figure politically in the early years of the colony. The descriptive notes by surveyor George McLachlan for Section 1681 in the Hundred of Ayers are typical: 'Light brown loamy soil generally covered with nodulous ironstone rocky ironstone hills steep and high. Open forest country timbered with stringybark ironbark cotton tree plum tree and grevillia. Large open flats in places with good dark and often black soil to creeks. Earle Peter Anderson and George Mayers of a 2000-mile journey undertaken between late July and mid-September 1887 'through the western district of South Australia from Streaky Bay to the boundary of Western Australia near Eucla inspecting the country and taking notes of its physical features the nature of the soil the water supply and rainfall vegetation facilities for communication and shipping ports'. Gilt-decorated cloth slightly rubbed; small paper label at the foot of the spine see below; edges and leaves adjacent to the boards a little foxed; overall an excellent copy. Pages ix-304 from the table of contents onwards are the sheets of the 1887 Adelaide edition. The first eight pages the cloth colour lettering and decoration for this London edition differ and it invariably contains the Woodburytype frontispiece portrait. The Woodburytype is derived from the original albumen paper photograph occasionally but not invariably found as the frontispiece in the Adelaide edition. Ferguson 18499 not noting the last point. <p>Provenance: Sir Henry Parkes 1815-1896 NSW politician and journalist with a commemorative bookplate on the front pastedown 'This book was one of a Collection associated with the name of Sir Henry Parkes and housed in the Chief Secretary's Department of New south Wales until 1956'. The inkstamp of the Colonial Secretary's Office is on the verso of the frontispiece and at the end of the author's preface; the inkstamp of the Colonial Secretary's Office Library is on the title-page and explains the small label on the spine.
