The 'Map of Adelaide to face Title' referred to in the list of contents is excised from this copy. Original plain cream cloth with an orange paper title-label on the front cover; cloth a little stained and a little worn at the extremities with minor loss to the corners and spine; four small areas of the rear cover a little indented each with two short parallel cuts to the cloth; two conjugate leaves pages 85/86 and 107/108 torn out and screwed up at some stage were later repaired and reinserted with clear tape which stained the paper and have recently been expertly restored; rear free endpaper torn away leaving just a small attached fragment; a few other minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of A.L. Young ink-stamped and as 'A. Lincoln Young' written in ink on the front cover front and rear pastedowns and front free endpaper and added to the foot of the Adelaide directory with his address 25 Royal Exchange written there and on the front cover. The Adelaide directory listing name occupation and address runs to 47 pages; the Port Adelaide one is seven pages long. Considering the colony was founded barely two decades earlier it is an extensive yet unpretentious list. For example the four entries under MANN in Adelaide are 'Joseph carpenter Brown street J. bonnet maker Brown street Elizabeth mangle woman Gouger street His Honour Judge Sturt street'. At the foot of the calendar page for each month there are notes under the headings 'Garden' 'Flower Garden' Fruit Trees' and 'Field' on average about 12 lines each month. Ferguson 10603 not noting the preliminaries or the map; not recording any details of the binding. The State Library of NSW has a copy on Trove not recording the presence of the preliminaries or the 36 pages of advertisements but noting the dimensions of the map as 220 × 100 mm. Maroon binder's cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover retaining the original printed wrappers possibly lined with plain paper at an early date; front wrapper waterstained and a little marked with minor loss in two places along the plain top margin and with two short sealed tears; light marginal tidemarks to the rear wrapper; title page a little foxed; bottom corner edges a little marked bleeding very slightly into a few margins; a few top corner creases or missing tips to the first ten leaves; overall a decent copy. 'The following Papers are reprinted from "The Farm" section of the Melbourne "Leader". The writer left Melbourne on 1st September 1874 and returned on the 30th November. The early Papers were written during September in which month the country round Adelaide is seen at its very best. The areas of Gawler Kapunda Kooringa Hill River Estate Clare and surroundings were visited during October and the return journey between Adelaide and Mount Gambier including Strathalbyn Willunga Goolwa Hindmarsh Island Narracoorte and the Drainage Country took place during November' preface. The critical comments on contemporary vine cultivation and wine production make interesting reading. Visits were made to properties and individuals well-known to this day: Davenport Boothby Crompton Auld Mrs Penfold Thomas Elder and Birksgate Thomas Hardie sic and Bankside and 'Clare - Seven Hills and St. Aloysius' College' with numerous 'Notable Wine Growers' in the region mentioned. A three-colour map printed surface 246 × 424 mm mounted on plain paper with the two original vertical folds barely visible; minimal light foxing; in excellent condition. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen. Jahrgang 1872 Tafel 22' is printed in the top margin outside the printed border. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen' Petermann's Geographical Communications founded by August Heinrich Petermann in 1855 ceased publication only as recently as 2004. It was 'the oldest German-language journal for geography in which all major geographical discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries were published' Wikipedia. About J.M. Gilmore we have unearthed nothing and when even such an indefatigable bibliographer as Ian McLaren doesn't record him you're definitely made a discovery. The map is much more informative. Gilmore made two trips in the Channel Country in south-west Queensland one in January to March 1871 the other in September-October 1871. The routes are marked in red on the map. Drop-title; small notches and tiny pinholes in the inner margins where bound now disbound; tiny nick to the top edge throughout with the top margin of the first page of the first report slightly discoloured; overall in excellent condition. South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 53 53A 54 and 54A of 1883-84; only 670 copies of each of the last three reports were published. Although these reports are numbered consecutively the periods covered are the last quarter of 1882 and the last three quarters of 1883; there is no report for the first quarter of 1883 probably because of the departure of the long-serving Government Resident Edward Price in that period. <p>The usual pastoral mining and agricultural reports are enlivened in the last paper by Acting Government Resident Gilbert McMinn's detailed account of his success in finding Stuart's marked tree at his last camp near the mouth of the Mary River. This discovery removed 'the last shadow of doubt in connection with the great explorer's achievement' brought on by Stuart's mistaken belief that he was following the Adelaide River. 'First edition 3000' is printed at the foot of the title page but it is decidedly rare: this is the only copy we have seen or handled in nearly five decades of bookselling in Adelaide. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 127 of 1896; one of only 500 copies. Henry Brown the South Australian Government Geologist was in the Northern Territory from early April to early August 1896; this paper contains detailed reports and maps for each of his five journeys. Etheridge's four-page contribution is 'No. 9 - The Occurrence of Olenellus in the Northern Territory'. Government Printer paperback

Original blind-stamped dark green cloth slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities and slightly worn at the head of the front hinge; map very slightly chipped on the two bottom corners when folded with two short tears expertly repaired; a very good copy internally a fine uncut copy. The author was 'late Member of the Legislative Council at Adelaide' from 1855 to 1864; he was also George Fife Angas's agent in SA from 1841 to 1844. This copy comes from the collection of the South Australian historian and bibliographer Thomas Gill with his signature on the flyleaf and the first contents page along with his attractive ownership stamp based on the letter G. His collection was bequeathed to the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia which later disposed of duplicates; this copy has the cancelled RGSSA stamp on the title page and the John Goodchild-designed Gill bequest bookplate on the front pastedown. The seven folding plans show parcels of land in many areas of the colony including the Barossa Valley Eyre Peninsula Murraylands and the western suburbs of Adelaide. 1886211931886. Very good condition. Very large albumen photograph of Sydney's harbor of the area now known as Farm Cove with the Charles Bayliss stamp at the lower left corner. Charles Bayliss 1850 - 1897 one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views often with people and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time.<br /> <br /> Mounted on a page from an album with handwritten caption in pencil. "C. Bayliss Photo Sydney". 10 3/4 x 8" 20 x 27cm print; album page: 16 x 12". Trove 41642848 cites a photograph of the same title but at a much smaller scale 20 x 15cm. unknown

Rigby on the front free endpaper. 'I was offered some time before leaving South Australia strong inducements to write a history of that virtuous territory which should be palatable to certain classes of a small community; but as I had no high opinion of either the colony or the principles on which it was founded or its subsequent career I could not be the partisan at any price of a locality which I could not conscientiously recommend as a suitable field of emigration for any class of my fellow-country-men' author's preface although he showed the cut of his nib on the title page: 'Castigat ridendo mores'. <p>Indeed nothing is sacred so it is perhaps hardly surprising to learn that 'every copy available was purchased and destroyed by the Angas family' Ferguson 10265 citing a note in the Petherick copy in the National Library of Australia. This copy contains a series of interesting albeit relatively unimportant early marks of ownership from William Charles Rigby's early blindstamp with premises at 55 Hindley Street to the ink signature of a policeman 'Frank Karuth Kadina S.A. 13/8/64' ruled out on the title page and the pencilled signatures of vigneron and publican Francis Robert Hunt Hahndorf twice and subsequently his son Leonard who died in 1919. The first of many significant and original contributions to Australian geology palaeontology and zoology by Father Tenison-Woods 1832-1889. These days he is perhaps more widely known for the fact that with 'Mother Mary MacKillop he helped to found the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at Penola in 1866' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Single issue of a New York newspaper with a long article entitled 'The Canada War' the Canadian Rebellion of 1837-1838 on the outcome of the Battle of Wind Mill Point which was fought by the Hunter Patriots to liberate the colony of Upper Canada from British rule. <br /> <br /> Many of the Patriots led by "a Pole Von Shulz" were captured and sentenced to be transported to Van Diemen's Land apparently 60 in all were convicted and transported to a penal colony. The names of the captured mentioned are William Johnson Johnston Gen. Birge and Capt. Sprague. Thos. J. Sutherland's capture is mentioned at the first page of the article. <br /> <br /> The article begins at page 2 declaring the "utter failure of the revolutionary expedition against Prescott" and measures 17.5 column inches. It continues on to page 3 in 2 columns for another 29 column inches. <br /> <br /> Also with an article on the Mormon War with action in Missouri described ". the instructions to Gen. Clark are to extirpate the whole fraternity of Mormons and drive them beyond the states". Established by an act of Parliament in 1834 it was a planned British province rather than a convict settlement. It was the first place in the world to grant universal suffrage and to allow women to run for parliament. It was one of the states that formed the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Flush-cut dark blue cloth over thin boards with the short title in gilt on the front cover; cloth lightly marked and rubbed at the extremities; spine a little sunned; inner hinges cracked but firm; very occasional foxing slightly heavier on the edges and endpapers; small light stain in the front gutter; an excellent copy. The name of the anonymous author a cousin of the somewhat more famous Victor is added in pencil on the title page. Ferguson 10643 recording only 'blue morocco cloth boards'. 'By 1866 a ravaging northern drought accelerated the need to succour bush workers who were often victims of their own excesses and were preyed upon between jobs. Hugo pressed for a "bushmen's home" like a seamen's home as a quiet sober refuge.
