Lundberg; minimal signs of use and age internally; a very good copy of a great rarity. 'Essential; an important regional novel and nearly a comic masterpiece' states Depasquale 'A Critical History of South Australian Literature 1836-1930'; 'a rambling episodic undisciplined novel part romance part satire part detective novel and . part didactic religious novel'. The five-page introduction by the anonymous author is instructive as are the five pages Depasquale devotes to the work. The novel is set in the mid-north of South Australia; the author notes that Emu Flat the place at which the story begins is 'about four miles S.W. of Clare'. The verso of the front flyleaf carries the later inkstamp of Tyrrell's Bookshop Gawler Place Adelaide. Printed by Webb, Vardon, and Pritchard [for the Author] hardcover

Flush-cut card lettered in gilt on the front cover a little foxed and nicked with a chip to the foot of the spine; a very good copy. Harry Pelling Gill 1855-1916 art curator and teacher at the time Director for Technical Art. 'In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities. His growing authority in art matters his self-confidence and abrasive manner and his attitude toward other art schools led to criticism. Critics found Gill a vain man who controlled lucrative and influential art offices and who disdained the democratic brotherhood of art. His supporters admitted that he could be uncompliant and disagreeable but said that he had worked hard was a good judge of the monetary value of pictures saved the board expense and was a courageous and incorruptible curator. He supported and reorganized the South Australian Society of Arts and was its first president elected from the fellows 1909-11' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'; this entry contains one of the few errors we have noted in the ADB - the title of this book is given as 'The Straight and Crooked Paths of Studentship'. Early binder's cloth recently rebacked retaining the top two-thirds of the original spine; cloth marked and mottled with some neat restoration to the corners; edges a little marked; very light tidemarks to the leading edge of the front flyleaf and an initial blank; leading edge of the first few leaves of Number 22 slightly chipped; bottom left-hand corner piece missing from the last leaf with the loss of about 15 words of text and a small amount of the colophon which is the same in each issue; overall an excellent run of the first 22 issues of this very rare weekly newspaper which ceased publication with Volume 1 Number 29 on Tuesday September 22 1840. The prospectus appears on pages 7 and 8 of the first issue; the proprietors' object is 'not mercenary but patriotic . they are not the organs of any party . they will offer a fearless and uncompromising opposition to every deviation from the self-supporting principle on which South Australia is founded'. Their aim in part 'is to present an impartial record of the colonial intelligence . 1st from the colonial papers; 2ndly from direct correspondents in the colony and other exclusive sources'. Accordingly it contains much original material. The editor was John Stephens 1806-1850; 'about 1838 George Fife Angas employed him to write emigration propaganda. Stephens's first notable work was "The Land of Promise" republished in 1839 as "The History of the Rise and Progress of the New British Province of South Australia". In that year his exposure of absurdities in T. Horton James "Six Months in South Australia" London 1839 ran to three editions. He also edited the "South Australian Colonist" on which Angas lost heavily; it was replaced in 1841 by the monthly "South Australian News" at a cheaper rate' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The ownership signature of Robert Kyffin Thomas is pencilled onto the front flyleaf and the blindstamp of the 'Register & Observer Office Adelaide' appears on an early blank leaf. Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas 1851-1910 the grandson of Robert Thomas who arrived on the 'Africaine' at Holdfast Bay in 1836 with a printing press was himself an influential newspaperman in the state. 'In 1877 he became the principal joint proprietor of the "South Australian Register" and as chief of staff he also edited the "Adelaide Observer". A parliamentary reporter he was in charge of the Hansard branch until 1882 when he became general manager of the "South Australian Register" which became the "Register" in 1901' ADB. Ferguson 3082. An unrelated gift inscription dated 1928 appears on a later blank page. <p>Charles Winnecke 1856-1902 surveyor and explorer 'entered the Government Survey Office in 1873 and went with the North Eastern Exploring Expedition to survey the border between South Australia and Queensland circa 1877-81' 'Encyclopedia of Australian Science'. See Crittenden 12 for mention of this revised edition of only 'the fourth in the line of Australian gardening books'. McEwin notes in his preface to this edition the addition of a chapter on the 'Formation of the Flower Garden and Shrubbery with Monthly Calendar of operations' calendars are now also included 'for the Vineyard Fruit Garden and Kitchen Garden. There has also been added to the catalogues of fruits and vegetables a list of the most esteemed varieties of each . An Appendix has also been added on Fruit-drying'. The formation of the company followed considerable lobbying by the South Australian Association a group consisting of philanthropists radical thinkers dissenters and merchants. After a years of negotiation false starts changes and amendments to suggested charters the British Parliament finally gave approval and passed the South Australian Foundation Act on 15 August 1834. Flush-cut quarter cloth and printed card covers repeating the title page details on the front with advertisements on the rear; covers rubbed marked and lightly tidemarked with some simple arithmetic on the front cover and front free endpaper; extremities of the covers lightly worn; minimal expert restoration to the foot of the front joint; title written in ink on the spine; minor signs of age and use; essentially a very good copy with the contemporary ownership details of Joseph Grivell 1854 on the flyleaf and indistinctly on the front cover. His name does not appear in the directory suggesting he lived outside Adelaide see below. In the preface dated 10 January 1854 the compiler apologises for the lateness of the appearance of the almanack the delay being 'occasioned by the extreme difficulty in obtaining compositors' - presumably all off to the diggings. He also apologises for the 'total omission of the Country Directory' for various reasons so the 42-page directory covers only Adelaide and suburbs. <p>Most of the balance of the book is given over to the usual statistics regulations and lists of assorted office-bearers. However the farmers' and gardeners' calendar runs to 18 pages and there is a lengthy and important contribution by E.W. Andrews: 'Navigation of the Murray. Being extracts from a journal kept on board the "Lady Augusta" during Captain Cadell's exploratory voyage from the Goolwa to Ganawarra' 51 pages. Fellow-passengers James Allen and Arthur Kinloch published their independent accounts of this pioneering trip in book form in late 1853. In any event Andrews' account was reasonably hot off the press; his last journal entry was dated 15 October 1853 less than three months before this almanack delayed in publication appeared. This rare pamphlet contains an account of Lindsay's 'Arnheim's Land Explorations in 1883' but it primarily concerns a more recent expedition 'a private one fitted out at my own expense'. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' has the following to say about these series of explorations by David Lindsay: 'In 1883 the South Australian government commissioned him to explore the central and eastern part of Arnheim's Arnhem Land; his party survived fierce attacks by Aborigines one group numbering 300. In 1885-86 he took seven men and twelve camels from Hergott Springs to the Gulf of Carpentaria tracing the Finke River to its mouth and seeking information about Ludwig Leichhardt. Lindsay surveyed the country between the overland telegraph line and the Queensland border explored the MacDonnell Ranges made a brief foray into the Simpson Desert and spent six months in the country between Lake Nash and Powell's Creek'. <p>This account first appeared in the Proceedings of the RGSSA Volume 2 Third Session 1887-8; the title-wrappers and pagination are new to this separate issue.
