First Edition. prior owner's tiny book sticker to reverse of front board. signed and dedicated by author. Over 400 years ago, in the year 1560, the first traceable Marshall forebear of the author died at Little Tew, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, this book endeavours to bridge the intervening years of family history to the year 1980. When beginning the necessary research for this story, the author already had in his possession many old documents and letters, dating back as early as 1810, which he had salvaged from his mothers home 20 years ago. With the assistance of a genealogist he was able to begin the Marshall story as long ago as the 12th century, with reference to a member of the Royal Staff of King Henry I, who is believed to have been an early family forebear. In dealing with ancestors over a period of 400 odd years, it has been necessary for the author to restrict the number of forebears written about at length. Those chosen for more detailed treatment in this work include John Marshall (1646-1735), the first Marshall to join the religious Quaker movement; Lucy Marshal, school mistress and poet (1811-1904) who emigrated to South Australia with her sister in 1850; Charles Stocker Morris (1851), journalist, poet, traveller and speculator' the authors grandfather who earns no good conduct marks for the way in which he treated his family; lastly, a branch of the Sturge family of U.K., with whom the Marshalls had an unusually close relationship over a long period of time. This book is LIMITED to 500 copies only. This copy being 275
