A rare care-de-visite portrait of Tawhiao c. 1822-1894 the 2nd Maori King who ".left a legacy of religious principles from which his people would draw a future dream for Tainui: the rebirth of a self-sufficient economic base supported by the strength and stability of the people. Native trees and foods symbolise strength and self-sufficiency in his statement: 'I shall build my own house the ridge-pole will be of hinau and the supporting posts of mahoe and patate. Those who inhabit that house shall be raised on rengarenga and nurtured on kawariki.' During Tawhiao's exile Waikato people had reflected and focused on the powerful symbols of the King movement. The man and the vision became united and part of the traditions and knowledge of the people. Instructions from the Commissioners of Audits approved by Queen Victoria's Commissioners of the Treasury which were provided to the Agents General of British colonies. <br /> <br /> Among the "Supplies" procured and forwarded to the colonies are included "Sub-Marine Telegraph Cables Steam Vessels Dredging Vessels" showing a keen involvement with advancing telegraph capabilities after the successful launching of the first telegraphic cable across the Atlantic by the Great Eastern in 1858. <br /> <br /> The instructions include two types of colonies "Crown" and "Representative" seemingly related to the application of the instructions which are "Strictly Applied" in Crown Colonies and "Applied when Practicable" in Representative Colonies. The Crown Colonies include many islands of the Caribbean - Bermuda Jamaica Grenada St. Lucia Bahamas Turks Islands and Trinidad. Bermuda is unusually listed "Convict Service only partly representative. A striking head and shoulder portrait of a Maori in New York wearing a Korowai or tag coat a white feather in his hair and lower chin Ta Moko or tattoo. It appears that this image is not recorded at the National Library of New Zealand. <br /> <br /> Charles Eisenmann was born in Germany and migrated to New York City around 1870 and opened his first photography studio six years’ later. He began specializing in theatrical and show business portraits and became acquainted with legendary showman and circus impresario P. T. Barnum whose human oddities or 'freaks' were a popular exhibit at his American Museum. The two came to an agreement where Mr. Eisenmann would photograph the unique performers so cards could handed out as promotion to the public.<br /> Mr. Eisenmann's images are noted for particularly being sharp clear and well-posed. adapted from Historiccamera dot com.<br /> <br /> It is unclear why Keewee was in NY but it was a common thread for tattooed individuals to pose for Eisenmann. Tattooing was banned by the NZ government in 1890 and it was not until 1962 that the ban was dropped. He is wearing a shirt tie and jacket underneath his cloak possibly something to do with missionary work. A beautifully constructed image in very good condition overall with slight oxidation around some edges of the verso and some light foxing in the background of the image. 4 1/8 x 2 1/4" The verso text- Chas. Portraits take by Instantaneous Process / Extra inducements to the Theatrical Profession. <br /> <br /> Syracuse University collection holds this image- "0078: Unidentified man with striped tattoos on face - recto: Bust view of an unidentified man with a tattoo of bold symmetrical lines on his chin and cheeks. He is wearing a coat with bow tie beneath what appears to be a fringed robe. He is identified on the card as a Maori man from Aotearoa.; verso text reads "KeeWee Maori / New Zealand." A search of the National Library of New Zealand's database for "carte de visite Maori" has 404 entries. Most are pictured and none appear to be the person illustrated on this carte de visite. Chas. Three items pertaining to real estate transfer and records in New York including a pamphlet with a section pertaining to the difficulties of doing a title search in New York City and with a recommendation for the admirably practical aspects of the newly enacted New Zealand Land Transfer Act 1870 New Zealand Act. <br /> <br /> The author proposes using a system based on keeping records of the titles to land as opposed to an index of names of title owners and commends the 1870 New Zealand Act as setting up the best system for doing so pp 17 -25. Olmstead notes the difficulty of doing a City title search due to the huge increase in the number of records. <br /> <br /> The pamphlet titled 'The West Side Association of the City of New York Transfer of Title to Real Estate A Lecture' by Dwight W. Olmstead. 8vo 28pp. Printed paper wrappers chipped at edges early owner signature top of front wrapper. FIRST EDITION AND A VERY PLEASING COPY INDEED. "Chiefly concerning the Mount Cook area. Malcolm Ross was a founder member of the New Zealand Alpine Club." Neate R73 <br> Mr. Ross was among the early mountaineers that sought the summit of Mount Cook considered one of the most daring and persevering of them all. There was both danger and hardship faced by any climber who sought the summit of Mount Cook. The weather on the west coast especially can be awful for fierce storms sweep up from the Tasman Sea that most tempestuous part of the Pacific whose twelve hundred miles furnished the twelve hundred reasons why New Zealand declined to enter the Australian Federation. The base of operations is distant for no alpine hotels and hardly any shelter huts had been built when Ross made the climb. The slopes and glens when one approaches the west coast are covered with so dense a growth of trees and shrubs that progress is always slow and difficult. The scenery is magnificent with a character that is all its own for New Zealand landscapes are unlike any others.' Edward Arnold hardcover

Illustrations show bountiful crops and harvest scenes a view of the State Experimental Farm at Ruakora a warehouse where wool is being sorted for export and many handsome prize cattle and sheep. Glasgow on rear pastedown at corner a.e.g. occasional lifting a couple images w/ minor over-exposure occasional slight closed tears still a VG exemplar. This splendid Victorian Grand Tour album preserves 42 albumen photographs some a coterie of the best souvenir landscape and portrait photographers at the end of the 19th-Century including Elizabeth Pulman James Valentine G.W. Wilson and Samuel Poulton Poulton’s Series. The album opens with a photo of the Osbourne House which was the former royal residence on the Isle of Wight constructed between 1845-1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Philip; views Carlsbrooke Castle St. Thomas Church in Portsmouth St. Boniface Old Church rebuilt in the 11th Century and the Luccombe Chine scenic attraction south of the Village of Luccombe and the Shanklin Shine - oldest tourist attraction on Wight. Other photos include the South Parade Pier built originally 1875-1878 and designed by G. Rale as passenger ferry terminal The Pier Southsea Balmoral Castle from the river Balmoral from the NW two views of Inverness the Waterfall in Glen Ross; the Union Chain Bridge spanning the River Tweed; and the HMS St. Vincent 120-gun warship launched in 1815 lying at anchor in Portsmouth.The unidentified well-to-do family appear to have traveled to New Zealand around 1880 stopped over at Madeira with very large unidentified photograph featuring a cart & donkey with giant palm trees and subsequently sailed onto Fiji. Two of the albumen images here capture a Fijian Village scene as well as street scene in Siwa Fiji. Photos by Valentine include those of Auckland Harbour and Ragitoto from Remuera New Zealand as well as Lower Queen Street Scene and Lake Takapuna looking South. Interior and exterior shots of the Auckland Hospital are included with one demarcated as “Pulman Photo 153†the Auckland Hospital on the hill Bowling Club in the foreground and others. Elizabeth PUlman 1836-1900 is regarded as the first professional woman photographer in New Zealand who took over her husband George Pulman’s business and darkroom following his death in 1871. Of additional interest is the large albumen photograph of an mixed-race photo of a mining crew featuring South Asian along with Euro-caucasian counterparts standing beneath the towering structure behind. Two additional harbour photos are mounted as well as two additional images of a very well-dressed wedding party with bride and bridal party carefully posed. N.P., hardcover

In the attack between 66 and 70 Europeans were killed and "Captain Thompson and his unfortunate men were all murdered on the spot and their bodies were afterward devoured by the murderers." Full column at second page 18 column inches. <br /> <br /> The New York newspaper also with a front page concerning money owed by owners of vacant lots in the city titled "Important Corporation Notice" by the Street Commissioners Office of New York. There is a large printed table providing a list of the vacant city lots and lot owners names with outstanding taxes due "for regulating filling or paving sundry streets herein". The list of owners names includes John R. Livingston the younger brother of Chancellor Robert Livingston and the son of Robert R. and Margaret Beekman Livingston Ogilvies the Widows Society Heirs of N. Image is of a carved Maori meeting house with a large group of indigenous people Maori men women and children dressed in western attire posed in front of the building's ornately decorated facade. Amongst the group all dressed in their Sunday best clothing is a European dressed in a dark suit with the words "Merry Christmas" above him.<br /> <br /> A wharenui big house is the communal meeting house of the Maori people of New Zealand. The houses are often elaborately carved inside and out with stylized images of the tribe's ancestors in the tribe's unique patterns. This meeting house was newly constructed with a large glass window next to the door.<br /> <br /> 6 x 4" laid down on card stock. The Christmas greeting captioned in white. A 24 issue sammelband of Missionary related papers a variety of titles issued between 1828 to 1834 all including wood engravings including a significant series on missions in New Zealand. The titles vary and include "Quarterly Papers for the Use of the Weekly and Monthly Contributors to the Baptist Missionary Society" "Papers Relative to the Wesleyan Missions And to the State of Heathen Countries" "Missionary Papers for the Use of the Weekly and Monthly Contributors to the Church Missionary Society" and it's follow-on "Church Missionary Paper for the Use of Weekly and Monthly Contributors."<br /> <br /> There are five articles on New Zealand. The March 1827 issue begins with- "The Subscribers to our Missions have felt a special interest in that to New Zealand. The savage character of the inhabitants on the one hand and their intellectual capabilities on the other have at once pointed out New Zealand as a place where the gospel might achieve a splendid triumph over vice and barbarism and bring into the Christian Church a race of men likely to distinguish themselves when once they had received the grace of God in truth."
