In India a liquor somewhat like gin called arrack is used; . They will draw or push a great weight if they are shown some arrack." 32mo 31pp engraved illustrated cover. Orig. yellow front over back cover lacking. Waterstaining and some foxing throughout. Cover with some loss and has an early sewed repair at the spine. Image is of a carved Maori meeting house with a large group of indigenous people Maori men women and children dressed in western attire posed in front of the building's ornately decorated facade. Amongst the group all dressed in their Sunday best clothing is a European dressed in a dark suit with the words "Merry Christmas" above him.<br /> <br /> A wharenui big house is the communal meeting house of the Maori people of New Zealand. The houses are often elaborately carved inside and out with stylized images of the tribe's ancestors in the tribe's unique patterns. This meeting house was newly constructed with a large glass window next to the door.<br /> <br /> 6 x 4" laid down on card stock. The Christmas greeting captioned in white. Faint outline of old sticky tape now removed at top of image; card corners rubbed. hardcover

A 24 issue sammelband of Missionary related papers a variety of titles issued between 1828 to 1834 all including wood engravings including a significant series on missions in New Zealand. The titles vary and include "Quarterly Papers for the Use of the Weekly and Monthly Contributors to the Baptist Missionary Society" "Papers Relative to the Wesleyan Missions And to the State of Heathen Countries" "Missionary Papers for the Use of the Weekly and Monthly Contributors to the Church Missionary Society" and it's follow-on "Church Missionary Paper for the Use of Weekly and Monthly Contributors."<br /> <br /> There are five articles on New Zealand. The March 1827 issue begins with- "The Subscribers to our Missions have felt a special interest in that to New Zealand. The savage character of the inhabitants on the one hand and their intellectual capabilities on the other have at once pointed out New Zealand as a place where the gospel might achieve a splendid triumph over vice and barbarism and bring into the Christian Church a race of men likely to distinguish themselves when once they had received the grace of God in truth." It goes on with a summary by Mr. White. Papers Relative to the Wesleyan Mission. Printed mostly on blue paper a few ordinances printed on ordinary paper. Many of the ordinances have a different imprint to that on the title page of "Harnett & Co. Printers Invercargill". The other imprints are Fitzgerald & Co.; Smallfield & Bain; and the "Times" Office Tay-treet. The Ordinances are numbered from 1 to 49. Ordinance 27 the "Criminals' Ordinance 1862" is listed as disallowed in the Table of Contents and is not present in the volume. The pagination is complex most of the ordinances are paginated individually occassionally reverting to an attempt at continuous pagination for the whole volume. Selected Ordinances: Immigration and British Agent Ordinance 1861; Fencing Ordinance 1862; Dog Nuisance Ordinance 1862; Sheep Ordinance 1862; Cattle Branding Ordinance 1862; Thistle Ordinance 1862; Vagrant Ordiance 1862; Bluff Harbour and Invercargill Railway Ordinance 1863; Licensed Hawkers' Ordinance 1663 sic; Oreti Railway Ordinance 1863; Cemeteries Ordinance 1863. "The occupier of any land upon which shall be found any noxious Thistles which have run to seed shall be liable to a penalty of not less than £5 and not more than £20." - from the Thistle Ordinance 1862. The Vagrants Ordinance 1862 provides a list of persons that shall be deemed "idle and disorderly" including: "Any habitual drunkard having been thrice convicted of drunkeness within the preceding twelve months and any common prositute who in any street or public highway or being in any place of public resort shall behave in a riotous or indecent manner" and "Any person having on or about his person without lawful excuse . and deleterious drug or any article of disguise". This list is followed by a list of offences the commital of which will have a person deemed "a rogue and a vagabond". The offences include: "Any person found by night having his face blackened or being dressed or otherwise disguised with a felonious intent." From the Ferries Ordinance 1862: "It shall be lawful for the Superintendent to cause Bridge to be built over rivers and to authorise Ferries to be established at convenient places on the rivers lakes or other waters within the Province of Southland for the conveyance of passengers animals and goods across the same". The Province of Southland was formed in 1861 when it split from the Province of Otago. This is the province's first volume of Ordinances.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . The portrait is full length with the chief depicted wearing a long feather garment with dark fringe and holding a taiha ceremonial spear in his right hand. Rangihaieta has white hair and wears a hei tiki around his neck. <br /> <br /> The portrait is from Barraud's 'New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive'. 8 3/4 x 14" matted.
