Printed mostly on blue paper a few ordinances printed on ordinary paper. Many of the ordinances have a different imprint to that on the title page of "Harnett & Co. Printers Invercargill". The other imprints are Fitzgerald & Co.; Smallfield & Bain; and the "Times" Office Tay-treet. The Ordinances are numbered from 1 to 49. Ordinance 27 the "Criminals' Ordinance 1862" is listed as disallowed in the Table of Contents and is not present in the volume. The pagination is complex most of the ordinances are paginated individually occassionally reverting to an attempt at continuous pagination for the whole volume. Selected Ordinances: Immigration and British Agent Ordinance 1861; Fencing Ordinance 1862; Dog Nuisance Ordinance 1862; Sheep Ordinance 1862; Cattle Branding Ordinance 1862; Thistle Ordinance 1862; Vagrant Ordiance 1862; Bluff Harbour and Invercargill Railway Ordinance 1863; Licensed Hawkers' Ordinance 1663 sic; Oreti Railway Ordinance 1863; Cemeteries Ordinance 1863. "The occupier of any land upon which shall be found any noxious Thistles which have run to seed shall be liable to a penalty of not less than £5 and not more than £20." - from the Thistle Ordinance 1862. The Vagrants Ordinance 1862 provides a list of persons that shall be deemed "idle and disorderly" including: "Any habitual drunkard having been thrice convicted of drunkeness within the preceding twelve months and any common prositute who in any street or public highway or being in any place of public resort shall behave in a riotous or indecent manner" and "Any person having on or about his person without lawful excuse . and deleterious drug or any article of disguise". This list is followed by a list of offences the commital of which will have a person deemed "a rogue and a vagabond". The offences include: "Any person found by night having his face blackened or being dressed or otherwise disguised with a felonious intent." From the Ferries Ordinance 1862: "It shall be lawful for the Superintendent to cause Bridge to be built over rivers and to authorise Ferries to be established at convenient places on the rivers lakes or other waters within the Province of Southland for the conveyance of passengers animals and goods across the same". The Province of Southland was formed in 1861 when it split from the Province of Otago. This is the province's first volume of Ordinances.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
