Nine pinholes through text hard to discern upon first glance else an excellent copy. Baldwin had earlier published a list of Hawaiian mosses and liverworts hepatic plants or Hepaticae in Latin. Malacology In the 1890s he devoted much of his time to studying mollusks malacology specifically the study of Hawaiian land snails some of which he named and described. In addition several land snail species in the family Achatinellidae were named in honor of him as well as a subgenus Baldwinia of the genus Partulina. The poem has religious overtones and expresses how much each member of the family - father mother and sisters - will miss the brother headed to Hawaii. "When we view they vacant place / Our bosoms heave with painful thoughts and tears / Unbidden start." From the style of the manuscript we date this circa 1840. unknown books

Lord Byron commander'. Engraved by Edward Finden after Robert Dampier. The plate depicts the river flowing into the bay with Hawaiians in the foreground some in the water with 2 who appear to do handstands others on the shore and a row of palm trees in the middle ground.<br /> <br /> Lord Byron was commander of the HMS 'Blonde' when it carried the bodies of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu back to the Sandwich Islands Hawaii; they both died of the measles in London after traveling there to visit King George IV. The crew included the Scottish botanist James Macrae Royal Horticultural Society the naturalist Andrew Bloxam and Robert Dampier serving as ship's artist. On May 3 of 1824 land was first sighted off the island of Hawaii at Hilo. Hilo Bay was called Byron Bay by Europeans at that time.<br /> <br /> 10 1/4 x 7 1/2" paper; tipped on to heavier black stock. A bit of fox spotting below the image near the title. The plates, taken from drawings by Arago on the voyage, are largely portraits of aborigines encountered around the world, and there is extensive reference to the comparative customs of the peoples. Despite the fact that six editions are recorded in Ferguson, this one is not.(although a four-volume version of the same year is Ferguson 2906). OCLC only locates 7 copies and this cataloger has never seen one.Seems to be mainly a promotional book which attempts to tie together the futures of California and Hawaii. The publication date is significant as the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898. It contains a foreword by Hugh Craig President San Francisco Chamber of Commerce regarding U.S. annexation of Hawaii. There is also a lengthy essay starting on p. 101 entitled "What Is and What May Be: Prospective benefits likely to accrue in the near future. Valuable and interesting statistics concerning the commercial relations of California and Hawaii." The last 15 pp. are taken up with biographies of California's most prominent citizens but the bulk of the book is a general history of the state and quite well written and illustrated. N.p. hardcover
