Cooke's version is after an engraving from a drawing by John Webber in 1779 from "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean." Captain James Cook 1782 - 1779 made three voyages to the Pacific and encountered Pacific cultures for the first time but also brought back to Europe the first large-scale collection of Pacific objects. John Webber was the artist on Cook's third voyage 1776-1780. This image most likely is part of a ceremony when Cook was greeted in Hawaii. From "Scenery of the East India Islands Etc."
