First edition thus of this Mid-20th-Century menu for the iconic Hawaiian restaurant on the East Side of Oahu Territory of Hawaii which featured a real covered wagon with canvas that children could play in. Along with the 72 oz. steak dinner customers could order Chicken Casserole Broiled Lobster Tail Hawaiian Chop Steak Japanese Shrimp Tempura a whole fresh Pineapple Ranch House Style with their famed breadsticks and cheese sauce. As per the image on the front cover this appears to have been issued after the restaurant was renovated moved to the middle of the property with a parking lot and updated with red brick and wood facade from the original white wooden siding. Binding with rubbing but solid and text with usual toning. A very good and stout copy.On pp. 201 to 219 we find one ofd the very earliest accounts of the American Missionaries activities in Hawaii. "On March 30 1820 Hawaii would witness the dawn of Christianity and the most influential religious group in Hawaii. After 164 days of traveling through the United States and sailing through the Pacific Ocean in the Thaddeus fourteen missionaries seven mission couples would arrive in Hawaii landing at Kawaihae and Kailua-Kona Big Island. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions funded these missionaries who were Presbyterians Congregationalists and Dutch Reformists from New England. Before their arrival the kingdom was transforming: King Kamehameha I the monarch who united the Hawaiian islands died and Liholiho Kamehameha II and Queen Kaahumanu co-ruled Hawaii. After reigning for six months they ended the kapu system leaving behind a religious void.In Hawaii the missionaries converted Hawaiian people to the Christian faith developed the written form of Hawaiian discouraged many Hawaiian cultural practices introduced their Western practices and encouraged the spread of English. One of the most powerful converts Queen Kaahumanu embraced Christianity imposed it to the rest of the kingdom and banned Hawaiian religious practices. The missionaries' impact would continue through their descendents who would become the political business and cultural elites of Hawaii and act as a driving force towards Hawaii's Westernization." The album is anchored by Olson's official U.S. Navy Certificate of Satisfactory Service confirming duty from December 18 1944 through April 23 1946 situating the material within the aftermath of the U.S. return to the Philippines following the Leyte landings and the transition into occupation and reconstruction. One photograph shows a group of Filipino children and young men gathered along a beach while another captures men and boys navigating shallow coastal waters in a canoe. Very good. 26 leaves illustrated with 103 black-and-white photographs mostly about 4.5 x 6.25 inches each with typed caption printed in both Japanese and English. Oblong folio. Contemporary presentation photograph album bound in gold cloth stamp-dated 1962 and with blind-embossed titles in Japanese two tassel ties. Spine chipped and partially perished some edge wear and rubbing both bottom corners bumped and partially split. Contents clean and well organized. A tidy annotated presentation album commemorating a trip through Japan by a large group of Shinshu Buddhists from Hawaii in 1962. The photographs are almost all composed with the tour group posed mostly in front of various temples and shrines but also at hotels palaces gardens theaters and other landmarks. The locations begin in Tokyo and proceed to numerous Japanese cities including Nikko Yokohama Hakone Kyoto Koyasan Izumo Hiroshima Yuda Nagasaki Beppu and so forth. The titles on the front cover translate roughly to "Spring Tourism Memorial Hawaii Shinshu Buddhist Tour Group." A rare glimpse into Japanese American religious tourism to the homeland following World War II. unknown
