Rara. Map of ancient Rome; vertical projection with elevation. Among the few monuments reproduced some are recent, such as the tower of Niccolò V in the Vatican, the basilica of S. Paolo, the villa of Giulio III (built between 1551-1553). Oriented with North to the left. This map is originally inserted, folded, by Bernardo Gamucci in his "Libri quattro dell’antichità della città di Roma raccolte sotto brevità da diversi antichi et moderni scrittori”, first edition published in Venice, Varisco & Compagni, in 1565. The same map, with various errors in the toponyms, with the addition of the decorative frame and the Latin text, is also included in the update of the work by Johannes Rosinus (Johann Rossfeld) "Antiquitatum Romanorum corpus absolutissimum ..." (1st edition 1585) published by Thomas Dempster, printed in Geneva in 1612 by Samuel Chouët, who went through various editions (1613, 1620, 1632, 1645, 1662, 1701, 1743). The map printed by Dempster is created by a new wood block, enriched by an ornamental border of Nordic style. Woodcut, traces of editorial folds, in excellent condition. Rare. cfr. Rarissima. A very rare map of Rome, unknown by mostly of the repertoiries. The view depicts the city as it was at the end of the 15th century, drawing on the same prototype commonly indicated in the panorama of Mantua in turn taken from a still unknown panorama engraved in the workshop of Francesco Rosselli around 1485.Work taken from the very rare "Plantz, pourtraitz et descriptions de plusieurs villes et forteresses, tant de l'Europe, Asie, & Afrique, que des Indes, & terres neuves: Leurs fondations, antiquitez, & manieres de vivre: Avec plusieurs cartes generales & particulieres, servans à la Cosmographie, iointes à leurs declarations: deux tables fort amples, l'une des chapitres, & l'autre des matieres contenues en ce present livre. Le tout mis par ordre, region par region, par Antoine du Pinets" printed in Lyon by Jean d’Ogerolles. The work include 55 woodcuts, many after Munster, comprising 3 double-page maps (cordiform world after Apianus, Europe and Germany), 7 half-page maps, 18 double-page views (including Lyon, Bordeaux, Geneva, Frankfurt, Florence, Venice, Rome, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Cusco and others), and 27 illustrations (including Mexico city). The view is inspired to Guillame Guéroult’s "Premier livre des figures et portraitz des villes", published in 1552 by Balthazar Arnouellet. From him, d’Ogerolles bought many plates, therefore we can state that this block had been already used many years before and has then undergone some changes before being reprinted. Woodcut, in excellent condition.
Charming miniature map of the world on an oval projection, engraved by Girolamo Porro after a larger world map by Camoccio on the Gastaldi prototype. The huge mythical Terra Incognita dominates the Southern Hemisphere. On a full sheet (8.3 x 11.6") of Italian text with decorative capital letter below map and page 193 above. Italian text continues on the verso. A fine impression minor soiling outside the map.Map taken form L’isole Piu Famose Del Mondo Descritte Da Thomaso Porcacchi Da Castiglione Aretino E Intagliate Da Girolamo Porro Padovan by Tommaso Porcacchi (ca. 1532-1576), humanist and scholar from Castiglion Fiorentino. The geographical interests cultivated since Pomponio Mela in 1557 gave life to the treatise published in 1572 by the company between the bookseller Simone Galignani and the Paduan engraver Girolamo Porro, who used the typography of Giorgio Angelieri (with the privilege of 10 years July 1572). The volume, with a dedication by Galignani to Don Giovanni d'Austria, presents the magnificent calcographic plates by Porro (a second edition, conspicuously augmented with text and tables, came out in 1576, then again, posthumously, in 1590, 1604, 1605, 1620 and 1686). In the dedicatory letter Porro tells of having been the promoter of the operation and of having entrusted Porcacchi with writing a book on the islands, reserving the illustration. The model is that of the "isolari", on which however Porcacchi inserts the spirit of ancient chorographies, adding a physical, historical and cultural description for each island. The concept is very broad (including peninsulas, large islands such as England or entire continents: North America), but in the "Prohemio" Porcacchi provides a glossary of geographical terms that testifies to the effort to correctly use the terminology of the discipline (see Franco Pignatti, Porcacchi Tommaso, in "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani" - Volume 85, 2016). In the text there are maps of islands engraved on half a page, including the planisphere - reduction of the wall map of Camocio of 1567 and the "carta marina”.Copperplate placed at the top of the sheet also including a descriptive part, in very good condition. Pen, black ink and watercolour on paper (590 x 440 mm), framed in a passe-partout (755 x 580 mm). Large, high quality watercolour of the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia. This natural arch spanning 27 meters was, along with Niagara Falls, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States in the late 18th and early 19th century. As an old natural wonder in a young country, it played an integral part in the formation of America's national identity and was "certainly a worthwhile side trip for travelers who hoped to experience the sublime quality of the American landscape" (Howat). The sublime aspect is often present when from the 1830s onward artists start depicting the Bridge: as in the present watercolour, where small figures are placed in the foreground to show the massiveness of the 88-meter geological formation. - The view shown in the present watercolour appeared as an engraving in John Howard Hinton's History and topography of the United States (1832) after a drawing made by the American landscape painter William Goodacre (1803-83). The image was widely pirated and imitated and appeared in numerous other publications, including Meyer's Universum in 1837, with a caption identical to the one on the present watercolour. The anonymous artist probably copied the image from the 1837 publication, but made several changes, simplifying most of the foliage but adding the large fern, duplicating the kneeling hunter and adding an extra deer. Interestingly, the engraving shows a tree peering out from behind the bridge, pencilled in outline, but never painted in. - From an Austrian private collection. In very good condition.
