174720078The Hague 1747. Engraved frontispiece and 23 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf spine and labels gilt edges marbled blue. Old signatures on the titles. A very nice set. A mechanistic and scientific approach to dowsing and magnetism the first French book published on the subject. Here the author attempts to remove occultism from the practice by posturing that the circulating corpuscles of the human body communicate with underground water sources through the divining rod as an extension of the arms much like the eyes make use of microscopes and telescopes to see things unavailable to the naked eye. Vallemont goes on to suggest other applications of the divining rod such as locating dead bodies and rooting out fugitives. The fine illustrations show proper ways of holding the rod other dowsing equipment and divinatory charts. Nicolas Caillou and Jean Musier Contemporary gold-tooled mottled brown calf with the title lettered in gold on the spine gold-tooled board edges marbled edges marbled endpapers. With an engraved frontispiece an engraved headpiece a woodcut headpiece and two decorated woodcut initials. 8 223 4 5 blank pp. First edition of the first biography and catalogue of the work of the Lorraine artist Sebastien Le Clerc 1637-1714. Le Clerc was a draftsman engraver and military engineer born in Metz. He published numerous books on geometry and perspective as well as on architecture. He had a great eye for composition and is still considered one of France's best engravers because of it. He initially worked as an engineer but his artistic talents were soon recognised by Charles le Brun 1619-1690 a painter who worked directly for King Louis XIV and painted several murals in Versailles. Le Brun advised him to abandon his engineering work and devote himself exclusively to engraving and drawing which he did very successfully. He was sought after by publishers and his engravings were already collected in his own time. The present work was published shortly after his death. The portrait of Le Clerc especially made for this work is often lacking but has here been added as a frontispiece at a later date.The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed the boards are slightly scratched the joints are somewhat weakened but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The frontispiece is likely taken from another work and has been mounted on the blank page before the title page the work is slightly browned throughout but otherwise internally clean a contemporary correction with annotation in the margin on page 18. Les 3 volumes. Antoine Calmet, Dom Augustin en religion, naquit le 26 février 1672 à Ménil-la-Horgne près de Commercy, en Lorraine, au sein d’une famille modeste(son père était maréchal-ferrant). Passionné très jeune par les études, il fut un exégète et érudit lorrain du 18ème siècle, connu sous le nom de Dom Calmet, bénédictin de la Congrégation de Saint-Vanne et Saint-Hydulphe. En 1728, Dom Calmet fut appelé comme abbé de Senones, la capitale de la principauté de Salm. C’est dans la grande abbaye vosgienne qu’il travailla et vécut la dernière partie de son existence, entretenant une correspondance avec de nombreux savants. Il y mourut le 25 octobre 1757. Dom Calmet a laissé une oeuvre immense. L’ouvrage le plus connu est son Histoire de Lorraine dont la deuxième édition fut écrite à Senones. C’est aussi à Senones qu’il rédigea une oeuvre à présent oubliée, une Histoire universelle en 17 volumes, à laquelle Voltaire collabora quelques jours en 1753; une Bible en latin et en français, avec un Commentaire littéral et critique sur tous les livres de l’Ancien & Nouveau Testament (Paris (1707-1716 ; 26 vol. in-4). Le Commentaire, oeuvre majeure de l’abbé de Senones, qui revenait sans cesse opérer des corrections, ou vérifier des traductions, a été reproduit à part sous le titre de Trésor d’antiquités sacrées et profanes, à partir de 1722, en 9 volumes. Exemplaire complet de ses planches. Preuves en fin de chaque volume.
