And of course mundane day to day business. ~~Of note is the special act in 1826 allowing for “That Burwell Joe Fosset John Hemmings Madison and Eston Hemmings persons of colour emancipated by the last will and testament of Thomas Jefferson deceased shall be and they are hereby permitted to remain as free persons within this Commonwealth.†though they could be sold again into slavery if they committed a felony and didn’t leave the Commonwealth. ~~Taken together a remarkable picture of life in Virginia in the still early days of the Republic.
