Original scarce FIRST ISSUE of the William and Mary College Monthly magazine. Running from 1890 to 1903 this periodical was rather short lived. As this was the first issue much is devoted to descriptions of the College in general. Features as eight page section on "The Growth of Science" that highlights the ongoing work and dangers of lighting New York City and other metropolitan areas. Also includes articles on the Y.M.C.A and the place of William and Mary in the new Era. Articles by members of the Philomathean and Phoenix literary societies. Engraved ads for several Williamsburg and Richmond businesses fill the last five pages plus inside rear cover. Some rubbing to covers and light wear to edges. Top corner creased at rear. Creased twice from being folded for mailing as issued and some bumping to the corners with some very light toning to the margins still near fine with the illustration clean and bright. Features an illustration of Sue Lyon as Dolores "Lolita" Haze peering over her now iconic heart-shaped sunglasses. The poster states "The book is banned! How did they ever make a movie of Lolita" and at the bottom "Not suitable for children." A disclaimer that unintentionally though rather ironically highlights the misguided production of the film which Nabokov himself was ultimately unhappy with and which had traumatizing real-life consequences for the underage star of the film Sue Lyon who in an awful instance of life imitating art became entangled in a "relationship" with the film's producer a then 32 year-old James Harris. The bright and bold almost pop-art style of the illustration combined with its ironic subtext and unique format makes this an exceptionally novel piece. Robert Burton unknown

Publisher's cream cloth front board lettered in red in Chinese with blind-stamped emblem of the People's Republic of China spine ends decoratively stamped in blind publisher's clear mylar wrapper brown endpapers flecked with gold publisher's white bookmark 562pp. Housed in original box with the original recipient's address details written to the front of the box. Accompanying the book are three separate items: The publisher's compliments slip in French one small sheet from the publisher in Chinese and a table of contents booklet in French. Published by the China Album Editing Committee Beijing 1959.</p><p>The book is in fine condition. The publisher's clear mylar wrapper is in very good condition with a couple of small tears and some very minor loss. The box is in very good condition with some expected wear and two of the edges are spilt.</p><p>Provenance: This copy is from the collection of Julien Creytens 1897-1972 who was a Belgian Post-Impressionist painter Professor at the Antwerp Academy and a committee member of the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Antwerp. He was given this copy of the book during a study trip to China in 1959.</p><p>This landmark propaganda photography book was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Created by leading photograph journalists and officials over more than a year copies of the book were distributed solely to political elites foreign dignitaries and key national libraries. Thus copies very rarely appear in commerce. RareBookHub records only a single appearance at auction.<br /><br />The book highlights a decade of achievements by the Communist Party in agriculture industry science education and the arts.
