Vol II - v pp390 complete with10 b/w plates 1 fold-out. Both volumes bound in half vellum over marbled boards with paper title labels to spine bindings in good condition with some marking to vellum some rubbing to boards and edges and loss to parts of title labels. Inside both volumes bookplate of H. Martin Mowll Baron Henry Martyn Mowll of the Cinque Ports to front pastedowns. There is smatterings of foxing throughout books worse at the beginning and end of volumes with Vol II slightly cleaner. The fold out plates are Foxed with some transfer. A reasonable tightly bound set with an interesting provenance and extra biography of author. Each page containing a quote from the bible a great philosopher work of literature or the like and a quote from Mary Lyon. Instead of page numbers there is a quotation page for every day of the year. Deckle pages top edge gilt. In very good condition with clean and bright pages and a tight textblock. A few small pencil marks in the first pages otherwise very clean. A beautiful copy of a quotation book recording the most important ideas to this great American pioneer in women's education. unknown

Richard Andreas Thoma 1847-1923 Pathologe; seine Habilitationsschrift Blut- und Lymphbewegung war Auftakt jahrzehntelanger Erforschung biophysikalischer Eigenschaften der Blutströmung Hämodynamik und Gewebe fokussiert auf physikalisch-mathematische "histomechanische" Gesetzmäßigkeiten. In Untersuchungen über die Histogenese und Histomechanik des Blutgefässsystems 1893 fasst Thoma seine Forschungsergebnisse zusammen. Er unterscheidet dabei zwischen primärem Gefäßwachstum und Gefäßwachstum durch Sprossung die Bildung neuer Kapillaren aus präexistenten Kapillaren. Neben verschiedenen mikroskopischen Techniken erfand Thoma ein Verfahren mit dem das spezifische Gewicht des Blutes bestimmt werden konnte Picnometer. Thoma entwarf eine spezielle Apparatur für Vitalmikroskopie die Untersuchungen über die Physiologie und Pathologie der terminalen Blutstrombahn ermöglichte. In den 1870er Jahren entwickelte Thoma ein Gerät zur Herstellung hauchdünner histologischer Paraffinschnitte zur mikroskopischen Begutachtung. 1881 stellte er eine Apparatur zur Zählung von roten und weißen Blutkörperchen in definierten Blutvolumina vor. 1897 beschrieb er ein automatisiertes Verfahren zur Gewebeeinbettung.7 unknown
