Interesting account of the failed expedition to reach Repulse Bay and then go overland to the Kent Peninsula. Includes an important early account of the Inuit people. Lyon's official report provides information on the Inuit peoples of Southampton Island the island is just north of Hudson Bay including their engineering techniques for boatbuilding burial customs and the report contains an anatomical plate. Lyon's attempt to reach the Northwest passage was ultimately a failure. The corners gently rubbed through the joints and the gutters are neatly strengthened a small corner dampspot on a few plates. First Edition of Lyon's narrative of his voyage in the Griper in 1824 in quest of the north-west passage by way of Hudson's Bay. Lyon managed to penetrate into Roes Welcome midway between Wager Inlet and Repulse Bay before he was driven back by bad weather. He here enumerates the difficulties encountered and provides interesting observations on the Esquimaux of the Southampton Islands immediately north of Hudson's Bay. The appendix to the narrative includes botanical researches by W.J.Hooker describing fifty-three species mostly from the Southampton Islands and notes by E.N.Kendall on the magnetic errors of the crew's compasses. George Francis Lyon one of Barrow's favorites had made a name for himself in the exploration of Africa before serving as commander of the HMS Hecla during William Edward Parry's second Arctic voyage. Thereafter in the spring of 1824 Lyon was given command of the sluggish and cranky HMS Griper with orders to winter in Repulse Bay in northwest Hudson Bay and then cross Melville Peninsula to explore the northern coast of mainland America. Ice conditions were difficult however and he was unable to even reach Repulse Bay and had to return home that same Fall. He was never given another naval command. John Murray hardcover
1825168765London: John Murray 1825. First edition detailing Lyon's attempt to reach the North West Passage through Hudson Bay on the HMS Griper. The voyage proved unsuccessful in finding the passage due to poor weather conditions. The work also describes the Inuit of the Southampton Islands and the author's scientific findings. George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 had made a name for himself accompanying Joseph Ritchie's scientific expedition in Africa. Lyon organized a publication of their findings on his return to London in 1820. He then accompanied Parry's attempt on the northwest passage on the Hecla in 1823 publishing The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon the following year. Lyon was then promoted captain and appointed the Griper. "Lyon's instructions were to reach Repulse Bay by whatever route he judged best and from it to examine the coast of the mainland westward to the point where John Franklin's voyage had ended its survey. He sailed on 6 June but the season proved unfavourable and he returned to England in November." The route that he chose "for reasons that never became clear" Howgego took them south of Southampton Island approaching Repulse Bay through Roes Welcome Sound and required "navigating a labyrinth of treacherous shoals". Foul weather and high winds forced Lyon to return incurring the wrath of Sir John Barrow at the Admiralty as a result of which he was never offered another commission. Provenance: a George Treweeke Scobell 1785-1869 the midshipman aboard HMS St Albans with his engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. b L. Harrison Matthews 1901-1986 with his ink signature on the front free endpaper. Matthews was a British zoologist of marine mammals. Octavo 207 x 130 mm. Folding chart frontispiece 7 engraved plates diagrams charts and illustrations to the text. Contemporary dark blue half calf by W. Pearce of Bristol spine with four gilt decorated low raised bands decorative gilt panels to compartments dark red label leather sides and corners edged with a blind scrolling roll Spanish on Italian marbled sides and edges. Judiciously recoloured in places a few patches of skinning spine ends and corners with small chips a little foxing and offsetting chart with old tissue paper repair to verso "View of Terra Nivea" with old offset mark plate of heads slightly shaved at head p. 128 numbered as p. 182 small ink marks to pp. 198 and final leaf. Ink inscription at top of title bottom of title page cut off old tape mark at top. <br/><br/>William Lyon Mackenzie 1795 1861 journalist and politician is one Upper Canada's most recognizable historical figures. He represented York County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and was the first mayor of Toronto. At first aligned only with Reformers he became increasingly more radical eventualy leading the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. Afterwards he fled to the United States but eventually the parliament of the Province of Canada granted him amnesty. After his return he represented the constituency of Haldimand County in the province's legislature from 1851 to 1858. <br /> <br />He published his first newspaper the Colonial Advocate in 1824 and continued to publish it weekly into the 1830s. Over its twelve years of publication Mackenzie explicitly advocated constitutional change for a responsible government that worked for the people. The Advocate was used as a voice for constitutional reform educating and inspiring citizens to take action against their government. <br /> <br />However besides a newspaper the Colonial Advocate Press published treatises such as this Catechism of Education. Mackenzie believed education should be available to everyone not just the elite so that everyone could benefit. "Political Education consists in a right understanding of the science of Government the business of which is to increase to the utmost the pleasues and diminish to the utmost the pains which men derive from one another ." p. 44. Most of each page consists of Annotations and Illustrations which support the author's views. These points make entertaining reading as they include quotations from sources as diverse as the 1st Annual Report 1829 of the Philadelphia House of Refuge p. 11 Wiliam Penn's letter to his family p. 24 John Locke p. 19 and the Book of Proverbs p. 5.
