George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 was part of the great British explorers of the early 19th century. Under William Parry's second expedition in the Fury to find the Northwest Passage 1821-23 he commanded the Helca. This expedition spent two winters in the Arctic attempting to meet John Franklin's land expedition to the Coppermine River. The time allowed Lyon to spend time with the Eskimos and learn their language and culture This journal is considered one of the first anthropologist studies of the Eskimos. James Archibald Houston 1921-2005 was a Canadian artist and expert in Inuit art. His introduction to this book and pen and ink illustrations give the Lyon journal a focus as a thoughtful observer on the Inuit culture. Lyon wrote "I verily believe that there does not not exist a more honest set of people.". Houston suggests that "Lyon's journal is best read in tranquility if possible on a winter's night beside the fire for it is a daring account quietly told.". Imprint Society unknown books

Lyon asserts the wolf is at fault. He also blames the wolf for the rampant spread of infectious diseases among livestock populations and the decimation of wild deer moose sheep and domestic animals alike. A trial lawyer with over 37 years of litigation experience Lyon proves his case in The Real Wolf: The Science Politics and Economics of Co-Existing with Wolves in Modern Times. In this detailed yet easy-to-read essay collection authors Ted B. Lyon and Will N. Graves investigate the majesty and myths surrounding wolves in the United States and offer a new true picture of the wolf in contemporary America. The Real Wolf is an in-depth study of the impact wolves as a federally protected species have had on big game and livestock populations. Each chapter in the book is meticulously researched and written by authors and scientists who have spent years studying wolves and wolf behavior. Contributing authors Rob Arnaud Dr. Arthur Bergerud Karen Budd-Falen Jess Carey Dr. Matthew A. Cronin Dr. Valerius Geist Don Peay Laura Schneberger Heather Smith-Thomas and Cat Urbigkit each describe a unique aspect of the wolf in the United States. The Real Wolf does not call for the eradication of wolves from the United States but rather advocates a new system of species management that would allow wolves game animals and farmers to live in harmony. 195021017New York: Harper & Brothers. Good in Good dj. c.1950. 1st Edition M-Y. Hardcover. NOISBN . ex-rental library book Guild Libraries Hollywood with attendant markings rubber-stamped terms on ffep a bunch of check-out dates on rear fep shelfworn with a bit of fraying at spine ends; the jacket is still attractive despite a few deprecations including tape-staining from internal repairs to rear panel an orange label remnant covering the bottom 2 inches of the spine a small chunk torn out of the bottom corner of the rear flap and a surface-scrape to the front panel that's somewhat obscured by the jacket design. Suspense novel set mostly in Monterey California about a newly-married woman coping with the in-laws from hell. Even before her baby was born "Hilda had already realized there was something wrong in the senior Trentons' household. And she slowly grew to understand what it was first in amazement then in anger finally in terror as the Trenton family closed in on her on her marriage on her child!" Yikes. The author's previous novel "The Frightened Child" was filmed by 20th Century-Fox as THE HOUSE ON TELEGRAPH HILL 1951; this one I guess was deemed a little too creepy for screen treatment. The "M-Y" printing code by the way translates to December 1949. . Harper & Brothers hardcover books

190417752New York: George Harjes Publisher 1904. Cloth. Very Good. WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR CHARLES WILBUR DE LYON NICHOLS along the margins of his frontispiece portrait. A solid very presentable copy to boot of the 1904 1st edition of this uncommon look at the elite of America's gilded age . Bright and VG in its purple cloth with lightly-rubbed gilt-titling along the front panel very light wear at the spine ends and front tips and a bit of light spotting to the rear panel. Internally clean as could be with no writing or markings other than the author's wonderful inscription to speak of. Octavo includes official lists of "The 150" and "The 400" among the "ultra-fashionable peerage of America" as well as "a few appended essays on ULTRA-SMARTNESS". A nice piece of not only Americana but of turn-of-the-century American social and genealogical history. Records show that only 1 copy in 1913 has come to auction since its 1904 publication.

George Harjes, Publisher hardcover books
