Original scarce FIRST ISSUE of the William and Mary College Monthly magazine. Running from 1890 to 1903 this periodical was rather short lived. As this was the first issue much is devoted to descriptions of the College in general. Features as eight page section on "The Growth of Science" that highlights the ongoing work and dangers of lighting New York City and other metropolitan areas. Also includes articles on the Y.M.C.A and the place of William and Mary in the new Era. Articles by members of the Philomathean and Phoenix literary societies. Engraved ads for several Williamsburg and Richmond businesses fill the last five pages plus inside rear cover. Some rubbing to covers and light wear to edges. Top corner creased at rear. Er unterscheidet dabei zwischen primärem Gefäßwachstum und Gefäßwachstum durch Sprossung die Bildung neuer Kapillaren aus präexistenten Kapillaren. Neben verschiedenen mikroskopischen Techniken erfand Thoma ein Verfahren mit dem das spezifische Gewicht des Blutes bestimmt werden konnte Picnometer. Thoma entwarf eine spezielle Apparatur für Vitalmikroskopie die Untersuchungen über die Physiologie und Pathologie der terminalen Blutstrombahn ermöglichte. Rare printing of the introduction to this educational undertaking in two series of fifty volumes each one for juveniles and one for older children and their parents. This introduction maps out the plan of the series and was sent out shortly after the prospectus. It was later printed as part of the first volume of the series. First edition an important coverage of the native peoples that George Francis Lyon encountered while commanding Hecla on Parry's second expedition in search of the north-west passage; Field notes that "almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions". Commissioned lieutenant in 1814 George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 accompanied Joseph Ritchie's abortive expedition into southern Libya in 1818 having replaced Frederick Marryat publishing a well-received account of his travels in 1821 the same year that he was promoted commander and "appointed to the Hecla under the orders of Captain William Edward Parry in the Fury. The expedition Parry's second in the search for the north-west passage sailed on 8 May 1821 entered the Arctic region through Hudson Strait examined Repulse Bay and the neighbouring coast of Melville peninsula and wintered at a small island to the eastward of the Frozen Strait. The next summer they went further north and entered Fury and Hecla Strait but the season being then far advanced they turned back wintered at Igloolik lat. 69°21' N long. 81°44' W and came home in autumn 1823 as signs of scurvy among the crew made it inadvisable to stay. On 13 November Lyon was promoted captain and the following year he published The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon" ODNB. The next year he led an unsuccessful expedition to Repulse Bay with instructions to continue the survey of the mainland Begun by John Franklin. His Private Journal proved popular and a second edition swiftly followed the next year. Octavo 204 x 127 mm. Engraved frontispiece and 6 plates after the author's sketches engraved by William Finden large folding route map musical score to pp. 134-5. Contemporary marbled half calf red spine label flat spine ruled and tooled in gilt marbled sides edges sprinkled brown and white. Armorial bookplate of Lord Blayney; either Cadwallader Blayney 12th Baron 1802-1874 or his father Lieutenant General Andrew Blayney 11th Baron 1770-1834. Binding rubbed light wear at extremities top edge dusty inner hinges partially split but firm occasional foxing and browning largely clean. A very good copy. Wraps heavily soiled. A few letters obscured on rear cover but easy to make out the two or three words affected. Corner chip front cover and roughness to edges of rear wraps. Organized by a group of old Reform colleagues under James Lesslie this report of two meetings as well as the address of the Central Committee with the object of raising a fund to purchase a homestead for William Lyon Mackenzie in gratitude of his labours and sacrifices for better government for the people of Upper Canada. The main body of the address pp4-15 gives a detailed review of Mackenzie's career. The committee was sufficiently successful as to purchase a house on Bond Street in Toronto for Mackenzie. Inside both volumes bookplate of H. Martin Mowll Baron Henry Martyn Mowll of the Cinque Ports to front pastedowns. There is smatterings of foxing throughout books worse at the beginning and end of volumes with Vol II slightly cleaner. The fold out plates are Foxed with some transfer. A reasonable tightly bound set with an interesting provenance and extra biography of author. Just before embarking for America Lyon published the first volume of poems ever issued by a member of the Church under the title of "The Harp of Zion." The book was donated to the Perpetual Emigration Fund and thousands of copies were printed and sold. The Perpetual Emigration Fund was set up to help any saints who wanted to migrate to Utah.
