189616261London: R.H. Porter 1896. FIRST EDITION. With 61 hand-colored lithographed plates 4 colored maps and numerous text illustrations. Later full cloth title in gilt to front cover and spine. A superb copy but for a tear on page 63 neatly repaired with tape. From the Library of James M. Dolan Jr. former head curator and director of collections at the Zoological Society of San Diego. First edition of this remarkable monograph with beautiful hand-colored plates by J.G. Keulemans and special maps illustrating the distribution of the family Loriidae and its component genera. The Lories are a family of small parrots remarkable for their brilliant and gay coloration. It is not only the appearance of these birds which make them attractive; some of them as those of the genus Chalcopsittacus will spontaneously approach human dwellings. Of special interest are sixteen of the seventy-five species here depicted and described for the first time

Mivart 1827-1900 in terms of mastery of anatomical detail “had few rivals and perhaps no superior among his contemporaries†DNB and Keulemans 1842-1912 was quite possibly the greatest illustrator of birds towards the end of the nineteenth century.

. First historiographer of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture to which he was admitted in 1682 Guillet de Saint-George Thiers circa 1625 - Paris 1705 became known through several writings the principal ones relating to Greece and the Ottoman Empire. Second edition 12mo engraved folding map short tear and engraved folding plate small marginal stain to pages 10 & 11 not affecting text occasional light browning contemporary calf slightly rubbed head of spine worn a very good copy.
travel2023 The material of the work comes from Giraud the French Consul in Athens and from the Capuchin monks settled there judiciously mixed with scholarly accounts by Meurs and others. The work was highly regarded for many years although Spon had made it quite clear that neither Guillet nor his brother as he had claimed had been to the city. In fact even Laborde remarks that Guillet had an 'intelligence remarquable des choses de l'antiquite.' His account did contain information on the contemporary state of the city and he very much emphasised the need to compare the ancient and modern cultures Blackmer.
Blackmer 766. 1638172261638. Guillet de Saint-Georges George. Les Arts de L'Homme d'Epée 1678 provides a structured dictionary of military terminology and practice intended for gentlemen trained in arms during the late seventeenth century when European warfare was increasingly systematized through professional instruction and codified knowledge. Organized alphabetically the work defines terms related to field operations garrison duty artillery and the mechanics of attack and defense supported by historical examples drawn from contemporary military actions. Issued in France during the reign of Louis XIV the volume reflects the formalization of military education within a centralized state that emphasized discipline hierarchy and technical proficiency. The text supports research into early modern military science linguistic standardization of warfare and the training of officers in seventeenth-century Europe.

Guillet de Saint-Georges George. Les Arts de L'Homme D'Epée ou Le Dictionnaire du Gentil-Homme. Paris: Chez Gervais Clouzier 1678. First edition of Volume II complete in itself of a three-volume set. Duodecimo 267 pages.
