1836WRCAM52765N.p. likely Augusta 1836. 62pp. Folded sheets stitched. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. Untrimmed. A rare Maine slip-bill document resolving that the citizens from Maine and other states should not interfere with the issue of slavery in slave-holding states. The legislature writes: "Any interference therefore of a State or the inhabitants of a State with the domestic concerns of another State is dangerous as having a direct tendency to create jealousies between the States and thereby weakening the attachment to the Union which is our only security against domestic dissensions and foreign aggressions."

This is a somewhat surprising position for the state of Maine to have taken at the time. Maine came into the Union in 1820 as a free state to balance the admission of the slave- owning state of Missouri. Also Maine opposed the admission of the Republic of Texas in 1836 the same year the present document was printed on the basis of Texas' position on slavery. It is curious that they would take two seemingly opposite positions in the same year. Still the legislature printed the resolution and authorized copies to be sent to the four southern slave-owning states mentioned in the title. unknown books
182634420Maine 1826. Folio sheet folded to 8" x 9-1/2". One printed page followed by three blanks. Addressed on final blank with folds for mailing and remnant of wax seal to William Thomas of Gorham Maine. Spotted Good or so.

The document is signed in type at the end by Committee Members Daniel Gilbert Thomas Browne and Ethan Earle. It is dated in ink "Sept. 5th 1826." The Committee urges Maine "to send forth from our state an unequivocal voice in favor of the Head of the National Government" by voting for Adams supporters Enoch Lincoln Governor Stephen Longfellow Congress and other members of the State ticket.
Allusions to the bitter 1824 presidential contest are numerous; the wounds inflicted by that campaign are obviously still open: "We have placed the man of our choice at the head of our government." If "we abandon him to the rude tempest of a bitter opposition how shall we answer it to our consciences and our country. What then has the President done that we should leave him to his enemies. We do not profess one thing and intend another-- we do not cry 'Adams' but mean 'Crawford'."
Not located on OCLC as of November 2017. unknown books

1843WRCAM52065London: T.R. Harrison 1843. 264pp. Dbd. Loosely stitched. Manuscript alternate page numbers very faint occasional foxing but overall a clean and crisp copy. A Parliamentary printing of documents relating to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 negotiated principally by Daniel Webster and Lord Ashburton which resolved several boundary disputes between the United States and Canada. Foremost it determined the border between Maine and New Brunswick which had been the subject of growing local confrontations known informally as the Aroostook War. The treaty also agreed on crimes for which extradition was possible and notably neglected to include flight from slavery on that list. The documents contain correspondence between Webster and Asburton on both of those subjects as well as several letters discussing the Caroline affair in which a group of agitators for Canadian independence attacked an American steamboat on the Niagara River and sent it ablaze over the Falls in 1837.
