Pages are intact and tight to the spine. From the back cover: "Anne Conway was an extraordinary figure in a remarkable age. Her mastery of the intricate doctrines of the Lurianic Kabbalah her authorship of a treatise criticising the philosophy of Descartes Hobbes and Spinoza and her scandalous conversion to the despised sect of Quakers indicate a strength of character and independence of mind wholly unexpected and unwanted in a woman at the time. Translated for the first time into modern English her 'Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy' is the most interesting and original philosophical work written by a woman in the seventeenth century. Her radical and unorthodox ideas are important not only because they anticipated the more tolerant ecumenical and optimistic philosophy of the Enlightenment but also because of their influence on Leibniz. This fully annotated edition includes an introduction which places Conway in her historical and philosophical contexts together with a chronology of her life and a bibliography." -- with a bonus offer--; . 65339London The Royal Society 1799. Two papers in one. Large 4to 29.4 x 22.6 cm. 55 33; 22 pp.; 17 8; 9 large folded engraved plates. Original printed wrappers. = The most detailed study of Asiatic elephants to that date. It includes a detailed account of the Bengalese "taxonomy" and nomenclature of elephants which differ widely from the scientific ones. The plates mainly show parts of the skull and the teeth. John Corse later: John Corse-Scott of Sinton or Synton ca. 1762-1842 was an army surgeon and naturalist who resided in India for a long time. He wrote more on elephants but this is his most important anatomical-osteological contribution. Subsequent to Corse's paper and announced there as a continuation is a work by Everard Home Some observations on the structure of the teeth of graminivorous quadrupeds; particularly of the elephant and Sus aethiopicus which includes illustrations of the African elephant's teeth as well. Both publications were communicated by Sir Joseph Banks and sometimes he is - wrongly - listed as the author. Published in the Society's Philosophical Transactions 1799 Part II with a few unrelated papers. Uncut with ample margins. Covers somewhat soiled some light marginal spots otherwise a very good clean and unmarked copy. Neither in Nissen nor in Wood. unknown
1799767L6London: From the Philosophical Transactions 1799. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. 11.5" by 9". None. A signed presentation copy of this very scarce study on Asiatic elephants. The first and only edition of this work. In contemporary paper wraps. A scarce work regarded to be one of the most detailed studies of Asiatic elephants of the time. In this study Corse details Bengalese nomenclature of elephants which differs to Western scientific definitions. Corse was an army surgeon and naturalist who lived in India. He wrote several works on elephants and Everard Home wrote a continuation to this work several years later. Inscription from the author to the title page head. Without a publisher or date dated from the ESTC records. ESTC reference no: T97617. Illustrated with eight folding engraved plates which mostly demonstrate parts of the elephants' skulls and teeth. A fascinating study on the taxonomy of elephants. In contemporary paper wraps. Externally generally smart. Minor chips to the extremities and some folding. Loss to the rear wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Author's signature to the title page. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good From the Philosophical Transactions paperback
