Printed label on the spine. = A well-illustrated work. The text figures are mostly page-sized plates each showing many artefacts. Written by the French archaeologist and diplomat René Neuville 1899-1952. He died in Jeruzalem where he was Consul-General of France. Published as Archives de l'Institut Paléontologie Humaine Mémoire 24. Stamp of a former owner Dr. Max Loehr in the top margin of the half-title otherwise unmarked. Max Loehr 1903-1988 ".was an art historian and professor of Chinese art at Harvard University from 1960 to 1974. As an authority on Chinese art Loehr published eight books and numerous articles on ancient Chinese painting". Wikipedia. The binding is quite attractive. An excellent clean copy. hardcover

Illustrated by Alphonse Marie Adolphe de Neuville 1835 - 1885 a French painter who studied under Delacroix and frequently depicted patriotic subjects. Bound in three-quarter red leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt titles and volumes to spines. Wear and some pulls to leather on spines hinges corners and edges of boards; chipping to paper along edges of boards. Rubbing to covers of boards. Front hinge of first volume was torn but has been repaired. All boards remain attached but some hinges are starting. Sunning to spines; although gilt remains bright. Light dampstain to margins of first and last few pages of first three volumes. Spots of foxing to interiors and to edges of textblocks. Marbled endpapers and top edges gilt.
