Rákóczi 1676-1735 was a Hungarian prince who led a rebellion against the Hapsburgs in the early 18th century. Although the uprising was unsuccessful Rákóczi became a national hero and a number of songs were written in his honor with this march becoming the most popular. A version of the theme was frequently performed by Romani violinist János Bihari 1764-1827 and became closely associated with Hungarian identity during the growing nationalist movement. The Austrian leaders in Vienna were anxious about a potential uprising and restricted the Rákóczy along with many other patriotic symbols.
