In der Sinnesphysiologie machte er wichtige Experimente zum Gleichgewichtssinn des Menschen zu Reizschwellen und zu optischen Täuschungen Machsche Streifen. In der Psychologie wurde er ein Wegbereiter der Gestaltpsychologie bzw. Gestalttheorie.
