2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with engraved portrait frontispiece (mildly age-soiled), some very light and inoffensive age-staining to text, neat pencilled nineteenth-century inscription of half-title of second volume; attractively bound in contemporary half calf, coarse-grain cloth sides ruled in gilt, backs with five raised bands, second and third compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments framed and tooled in gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, a very good, bright, crisp copy in wholly unrestored period binding. The UK edition is much scarcer than its US counterpart published in the same year, particularly as two volumes as originally issued. Kean died in 1833.

First edition inscribed of this semi-historical novel based on original diaries and other original sources found near her family’s land claim in Eastern Oregon describing the discovery of the Blue Bucket gold find somewhere along the route of the tragic wagon train that followed Joe Meek in the Meek Cut-off in 1845. Meek and others tried to return to the spot where the discovery had been made in 1868 but they could not find it. Scarce in dustjacket. De Moss 1882-1955 was the daughter of George & Phoebe Cornwall who had taken the Applegate Trail in 1846 to the Oregon Country and went onto teach over 26 years in and around Hermiston & Umatilla OR as well as write several books and poetry.
