The male recipient is not named and the letter is signed ‘Stanhope A. Forbes’ with slight smudging to the ‘o’ of ‘Forbes’. As he is obliged to him for his letter ‘& the kind things you are good enough to say about my work’ he is happy ‘to accede to your request to append my signature’. 17 September 1937. No marks or inscriptions to contents. A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards, damp effect to lower front outside edge and no bumping to corners. Dust jacket not price clipped or marked or torn or creased with slight sunning to spine and now protected in non-removable transparent sleeve. 254pp. The history from the earliest times up to the 7th century of what are now the British counties of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
First edition, 4to, [2], iv, 26pp., title page mounted on a stub, folding engraved plate, presentation inscription on title "from the Author to Davis Giddy Esqr. [Davies Gilbert]", 4pp. list of subscribers provided "from a copy given me by J. Rashleigh. J. D. Enys", several ink corrections and annotations (by the author?), small neat stamp to fly-leaf, without the final leaf that contains a note announcing the issue of the engravings, marbled endpapers, nineteenth century half green morocco, spine gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut, a nice copy. A note pasted in at the end "Mr. F. is sorry he cannot send with this a Plate of the Window, but he has only one copy left.", later provided by Mr Rashleigh of Menabilly. A early ink note on the title refers to the author "The Revd. Benjamin Forster, Rector of Boconnoc & St. Michael Carhayes in Cornwall." The ESTC locates copies at the British Library, the Bodleian, University of California, Riverside, and University of Texas.
