The second of several Japanese-set novels by this author a British diplomat and Foreign Office official who spent most of the 1920s stationed in Asia and per Wikipedia "was a significant influence on the British foreign policy in the Far East in the early 20th century." Per the jacket blurb both his first two books the previous one was "Kimono" were "bitterly assailed by sentimental orientalists who allege that the coldly realistic picture Mr. Paris paints of Japanese life is libellous but it is significant that Far-Eastern English journals have been unanimously enthusiastic about Mr. Paris's accuracy and insight." The book concerns a young English priest who marries a Japanese woman. It should be noted that the book is unrelated to the later novel of the same name by James Michener which was adapted for a Hollywood movie in 1957 even though the two books share the theme of interracial romance. .
