The present texts document the plans for reconstructing it after the ascension of Louis XVI who unlike his father favored renovation rather than demolition of the existing structure. The architect Bernard Poyet was supervisor of works in the city of Paris. He proposed a new façade based on Rome's Colosseum. The design was composed of a series of pavilions converging towards a center like the spokes of a wheel merging at the hub. His plan was rejected in favor of a more utilitarian design.
