183564009<p>aquatint RARE beautiful view from 'Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa Majesté La Favorite exécuté pendant les années 1830 1831 1832 pl. 48 sketched by Francois-Edmond Paris engraved by Sigismond Himely and under the direction of Louis Auguste de Sainson with Arthus Bertrand editeur. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic scientific and artistic means intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne 1805-1871 was a French painter maritime and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. He accompanied the French naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville 1790-1842 onboard the L'Astrolabe 1826-1829 Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace 1793-1875 on La Favorite 1830-1832 and Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant 1793-1858 on La Bonite 1836-1837. Sigismond Himely 1801-1872 was a mid 19th C. Swiss painter viewmaker acquaint engraver active in Paris known for his excellent aquatints. Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1877 was a French artist lithographer and engraver. He worked as a draughtsman on the Astrolabe in its circumnavigation of the globe in 1826-1829 and then spent almost 5 years to create the prints for the publication of its expedition narrative. 184594<p>Large 8vo mm 242x160 pp. 48; a good copy in early 20th-century half morocco spine lettered gilt the original printed wrappers and spine bound in; with stamp of the 'Société Démulation du Dept. des Vosges' to upper wrapper; bookplate of Emmy Joubert; <strong>with one page autograph ms. by Mérimée tipped in</strong>. <strong>The first appearance in print of <em>Carmen</em></strong>. Mérimée's short novel was first published in the journal <em>Revue des Deux Mondes</em> in 1845. It passed virtually unnoticed and did not receive a single review. Mérimée reworked the text before publishing it in book form alongside two other novellas the following year. In 1852 <em>Carmen</em> appeared as the first text in a collection of Mérimée's works <em>Nouvelles</em> together with Mérimée's own translation of Pushkin's <em>The Gypsies</em>. In this form it began to enjoy some success and <em>Nouvelles</em> was reprinted regularly throughout the 1850s and 1860s <strong>but it was not until 1875 with the creation of Bizet's opera based closely on Mérimée's text that the Carmen myth was created</strong>.<br /><br />A separate off-print on <em>papier vélin</em> is also known printed in a very small number of copies.<br /><br />The autograph ms. is a memo on the Revolution of 1848 with reference to the recovery of looted material from the museums and national collections in Paris: '… Des ouvriers pauvres ont rapporté au Musée du Louvre des camées d'un prix inestimable trouvés dans les appartements des Tuileries. Ils n'ont accepté aucune récompense et n'ont pas même voulu faire connaitre leurs noms. Déjà par cette improvisation de l'ordre unique chez les Français d'autres citoyens avaient eu l'heureuse idée de porter à leurs musées des objets d'art trouvés dans des résidences royales …' From 1834-1860 Mérimée held the position of inspector general of historic monuments and he published many reports in this official capacity. The present note which has been dated 1848 in pencil in a later hand is evidently a contemporary account of the events of that year.</p> Au Bureau de la Revue des Deux Mondes

Illustrations marbled endpapers sewn-in red/green/yellow page marker. Near fine. Spine only faintly shellacked a turn-of-the-century practice with hand-lettered paper shelf label near foot. Exceptionally handsome tight first edition of this detailed guide to American participation of this world's fair to end all world's fairs held in Paris between 12 April and 12 November 1900. Like all world's fairs its intention was to celebrate mankind's accomplishments and advances in every field imaginable -- but with the debut of the new century it was felt appropriate to celebrate accomplishments of the preceding century as well. This remarkable copy bears a red-bordered 4½" X 3/4" colophon slip typed in blue tipped to an inner flyleaf noting that "Twenty-five copies of this catalogue have been bound in this form for special distribution. This copy is numbered 11." Recipients of this specially-bound edition were likely important politicos of the day. The name of this special recipient has been giltstamped on the front board: "WILLIAM B. ALLISON SENATOR." From the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 the powerful Iowa Republican who as U.S. senator from that state 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics" Allison owned "hundreds of books on government economics history banking finance and the tariff as well as volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader Allison doubtless read most of these volumes if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation. Alexander Hamilton was his guidepost in finance Robert Burns his favorite poet and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' his favorite poem."
