Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.</p><p>The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition. NO date but possibly between around 1840 and given the 'Dembour et Gangel' note on the print see later likely a later impression of a late 18th Century print . Additional printed caption "VUE DU CHATEAU DE St CLOUD PRES DE PARIS" inverted mirror image on the upper margin. Paper very lightly marked and quite creased and 'rolled' to the edges with quite a lot of closed tears - no loss neatly repaired with archive tape to the reverse to those broad blank margins otherwise a very good engraving. This interesting prospective view most likely prepared for a 'peep box'. "Vue Optique" Vue d'Optique or perspective view/optical view refers to a genre of etching popular during the second half of the 18th century and well into the 19th. Such 'Vues' were specifically developed to provide the illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope also known as an "optical diagonal machine" or viewers with similar functions. Optical viewers were generally popular with well-to-do European families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This print has the Publisher as 'A Paris chez Basset rue St Jacques 64' at the left hand side of the print under the main Title and "Dembour et Gangel editeurs a Metz Moselle. Depose" on the right hand side under the main Title. Other than those mentioned above there are no other publication details or text on this print. Paul Andre Basset was a Paris print publisher printseller wallpaper manufacturer and the son of André Basset. He married in 1787 and was very active during the revolutionary period. He was situated in Paris at rue Saint Jacques no.64 where his firm remained until at least 1885. Dembour and Gangel were also Publishers and Printer manufacturers. Associated from 1840 to 1852. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic scientific and artistic means intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne 1805-1871 was a French painter maritime and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. He accompanied the French naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville 1790-1842 onboard the L'Astrolabe 1826-1829 Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace 1793-1875 on La Favorite 1830-1832 and Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant 1793-1858 on La Bonite 1836-1837. Sigismond Himely 1801-1872 was a mid 19th C. Swiss painter viewmaker acquaint engraver active in Paris known for his excellent aquatints. Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1877 was a French artist lithographer and engraver. He worked as a draughtsman on the Astrolabe in its circumnavigation of the globe in 1826-1829 and then spent almost 5 years to create the prints for the publication of its expedition narrative. Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan.
