An unrecorded contemporary printing as a supplement to the official GAZETTE produced by the Imprimerie Royale of the peace treaty between France and England at the end of the American Revolution. Concluded on the same date as similar treaties between England and the United States and Spain this treaty enhanced the French position in the Caribbean and improved their position concerning fishing rights off Canada in India and elsewhere. hardcover books

1783WRCAM34310Paris 1783. 4pp. printed in double columns. Quarto. Later marbled boards leather label. Near fine. On January 20 1783 terms for a general armistice between England and France and Spain were reached two months after terms with the United States had been worked out. A general armistice was agreed upon for February 4. This supplement to the ROYAL GAZETTE was probably the first publication of the terms of the British-French agreement. The French advantage after Yorktown had been largely lost with De Grasse's defeat in the Caribbean in 1782 so the net effect was largely a return to status quo with Caribbean possessions of both sides restored. Furthermore England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. DAVENPORT 169. hardcover books

1875WRCAM40335N.p. but possibly Paris 1875. Forty engraved plates. Folio. Contemporary green half calf and marbled boards spine gilt. Spine faded. Lightly rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. First plate lightly age- toned. Some very minor scattered foxing else bright and clean internally. Very good. A volume of engravings depicting the voyage of the ship Bellone and seafaring life. Following the "title" plate which is numbered 21 are scenes of Africa primarily in Senegal. These plates depict the natives villages and cities. After the scenes of Africa are plates depicting maritime life evidently on a French naval vessel in the Atlantic. These images are much more delicately engraved and are not numbered. The first few of these detail a "day in the life" of a sailor from morning muster and breakfast through scrubbing the deck and inspection and shore leave. Two plates of Uruguay and two unidentified landscapes are also inexplicably inserted in the midst of this sequence. An interesting and perhaps unique compilation of travel and maritime images. hardcover books
2000169733New York: Public Affairs Press 2000. Hardcover. VG/VG. Beige and brown boards with gilt spine lettering. Illustrated dust jacket with blue and gray lettering. xii 344 pp. Illustrations. "An inspiring account by an acclaimed biographer of the lives of Larimer and Gwendolyn Mellon who used their initiative and their wealth to build the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti a place where life expectancy was once the lowest in the hemisphere. Larimer Mellon was the youngest son of Paul Mellon renowned Pittsburgh financier and seemed destined for a life of high finance and high society. Instead he went to med-school and upon graduating moved with his wife Gwen to Haiti the poorest country in the hemisphere. In one of the most isolated and impoverished areas of the country they built a hospital and for the rest of his life Larry Mellon served as a physician there. To this day Gwen Mellon remains at the hospital and in Haiti. Song of Haiti is a beautifully written look at the passion that drove this couple and that inspired them to leave behind a world of almost unfathomable wealth and luxury and devote their lives to the poorest of the poor in a country far from home."--Provided by publisher. Hardcover. book has only minor wear to extremities brief gift inscription "To 'Mamma'" on ffep; jacket is somewhat age-toned with small tears and minor paper loss at most corners and base of spine short closed tear at lower left corner of front panel. The second of several Japanese-set novels by this author a British diplomat and Foreign Office official who spent most of the 1920s stationed in Asia and per Wikipedia "was a significant influence on the British foreign policy in the Far East in the early 20th century." Per the jacket blurb both his first two books the previous one was "Kimono" were "bitterly assailed by sentimental orientalists who allege that the coldly realistic picture Mr. Paris paints of Japanese life is libellous but it is significant that Far-Eastern English journals have been unanimously enthusiastic about Mr. Paris's accuracy and insight." The book concerns a young English priest who marries a Japanese woman. It should be noted that the book is unrelated to the later novel of the same name by James Michener which was adapted for a Hollywood movie in 1957 even though the two books share the theme of interracial romance. .
