Spine with black morocco label with gilt title. = A fine monograph perhaps the first on the ontogeny of the Bryozoa. The marine biologist and embryologist Jules Henri Barrois 1852-1943 was director of the "Laboratoire de Zoologie Maritime" à Villefranche sur Mer. The plates are very fine and printed by the Dutch artist and printer P. W. Trap. With small printed label "hommage de l'auteur" in the top margin of the half-title. A very good clean copy. Following Godwin-Austen he observed that the axes of the deformation that affected the English Cretaceous were those active during the Primary era. 2977Lille: F. Bracke 1848. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this rare provincial imprint. 80 pp. A SPECIAL COPY ENTIRELY PRINTED ON PINK WOVE PAPER. The only other copy I have been able to locate on regular paper is in the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris. The first part comprises critical commentaries mainly concerning contemporary actresses. The second part is a collection of poems on various subjects including "Les chemins de fer" surely among the first poems ever devoted to railroads. This poem predicts that with the benefits of this mode of transportation France will ultimately reign over the world. Small 8vo. Original wraps. Entirely uncut. A good copy with the exlibris of A. Kühnholtz-Lordat pasted on the inside front cover of all three volumes A good copy.</p><p>The sales catalogue of the library of the French court physician Camille Falconet 1671 - 1762 who had been a book collector for more than 70 years. The catalogue was compiled by Jean Capperonnier and edited by Jacques-Marie Barrois. Falconet bequeathed to the Bibliothèque du Roi all those books not already in that collection and stipulated that the rest were to be sold; the items in the catalogue 11000 destined for the Bibliothèque du Roi are set off within square brackets very unusual in a catalogue. The sale 6 March 1763 fetched a total of 39062 livres. 19798 lots containing over 60000 books are listed including manuscripts maps and prints and with very significant holdings in medicine and natural history.<strong> It is also this is the first auction catalogue with a separate chapter on America</strong> II 363 ff. Peignot calls this catalogue "un des plus considérables qui existent". c.f. Grolier Club # 169; Taylor Book Catalogues p. 240-241.</p>
