BIBLIO-52383Pickering & Chatto London 1999 reprint of the 1798 edition. 5 vols cloth 8vo. xliii xxiv 577 576 vii 512 vii 468 vi 675 pp. The set reprints the 1798 edition of "The works of Horatio Walpole Earl of Orford" published by G.G. and J. Robinson and J. Edwards London and edited by Mary Berry with a substantial new introduction by Peter Sabor. From the introduction: "This facsímile edition of the Works of 1798 reveals the range of Walpole's oeuvre. Walpole as historian dramatist poet essayist and literary critic remains a shadowy being in contrast to the familiar figure of Walpole as novelist correspondent and writer of political memoirs. Faced with the bulk of the collection and a short deadline Charles Burney complained at the outset of his review that "far from having been able as yet to enter on a critical discussion of the merit of the several articles contained in this very interesting publication we have scarcely had leisure enough to cut open the leaves of the first volume" July 1798 p. 323. Two hundred years later it is time for readers to explore the further recesses of the Works entering on the critical discussion that their first reviewer for all his reservations about their author acknowledged Walpole's writings to deserve." Contents: Vol. 1. Fugitive pieces. The mysterious mother. Catalogue of the royal and noble authors of England; Vol. 2 The castle of Otranto. Historic doubts on Richard the Third Aedes walpolianae. Nature will prevail. On modern gardening; Vol. 3. Anecdotes of painting; Vol. 4. Catalogue of engravers. Hieroglyphic tales; Vol. 5. Selected correspondance. As new save for small nick to head of Volume II. Pickering & Chatto, London, 1999 reprint of the 1798 edition hardcover
