1856Cat353Boston Massachusetts: Oliver Ditson & Co 1856. Lithographed sheet music title page after a photograph by Turner & Cutting. Folio. Some trimming and edge wear; image strong; good to very good. An early and scarce lithographic design by Winslow Homer executed during his apprenticeship at J. H. Bufford & Co. and among a small group of sheet music illustrations from his formative period. The image commemorates the widely publicized wager made by journalist and political figure Benjamin Perley Poore during the heated 1856 Massachusetts elections which were shaped by the collapse of the Whigs and the rise of the Republicans. Poore backing one slate generally identified with the Democratic or anti-Republican interest agreed that if his side lost he would wheel a barrel of apples from his home in West Newbury to Boston; upon defeat he fulfilled the pledge completing the roughly thirty-six-mile journey to considerable public attention. Homer’s composition after a now-lost photograph by Turner & Cutting shows Poore mid-route with the barrel mounted in a wheelbarrow accompanied by amused onlookers and a roadside sign indicating Boston. 1851List3661New York: Firth Pond & Co 1851. Folio sheet music illustrated tinted lithographic cover by Sarony & Major. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 x 10 inches. Light toning and minor edge wear; archival tape to spine likely removed from a volume at some point very good overall. A particularly handsome illustrated edition of Stephen C. Foster’s sentimental ballad “Willie My Brave†featuring an elaborate tinted lithographic cover by the New York firm of Sarony & Major. The central image depicts a seated woman gazing out toward the sea while a greyhound rests its head upon her lap conveying the melancholy theme of absence and waiting suggested by the song. Surrounding vignettes include dramatic maritime scenes with a ship struggling in rough waters and another vessel sailing toward a distant harbor. The dog is especially well done while the accompanying ship in a storm drives home the point of the song. Among Foster’s many illustrated title pages this example is often considered one of the most attractive. According to William H. Fuld’s Pictorial Bibliography of First Editions of Stephen Foster 1957 the present example meets all points for the first edition initial state. The song itself enjoyed considerable popularity in the early 1850s and appeared in numerous subsequent printings. Firth, Pond & Co unknown
1883208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown

Overall a very good attractive copy. <p>The Italian text of "Ernani" by Francesco Maria Piave is based on the drama "Hernani" by Victor Hugo. It is here printed with an English translation. Though a title in Ditson's "Standard Opera Libretto" series there is printed music on part of 17 pages. The handsome engraved ad on the rear wrap depicts Oliver Ditson & Co.'s building in Boston. A decorative late nineteenth-century dance publication for “Trocha†described on the cover as “A Cuban Dance†composed by the African American composer and bandleader W. H. Tyers. The elaborate pictorial cover incorporates stylized tropical foliage and island scenery rendered in a bold single-color design typical for the period’s fascination with exoticized musical forms. <br /> <br /> William H. Tyers 1870–1924 was an African American composer arranger and bandleader active in New York during the ragtime era. Born in Petersburg Virginia to Henry Tyers and Jane “Jennie†Jones both formerly enslaved he spent part of his youth in Richmond before his family relocated to New York City where he began studying piano. His early teachers recognized an aptitude for composition as well as performance and by the mid-1880s he was writing dance pieces including polkas and waltzes. Around the age of twenty Tyers secured employment as a music librarian and arranger with a touring concert company a position that brought him to Europe where he studied orchestration and arranging with Professor Gaspari in Hamburg.<br /> <br /> Returning to New York Tyers became active in the city’s rapidly expanding popular music trade working as an arranger and composer for publishers including F. A. Mills and Jos. W. Stern & Co. In 1896 he published “Sambo†a syncopated march sometimes considered to be one of the first instrumental rags.1 “Trocha†also released in the 1980s brought Tyers prominence for his ability to write Latin-style rhythms. It was re-issued in 1913 as a tango and its success led Tyers to work as an arranger with Joseph W. Stern in 1897.<br /> <br /> Tyers’ compositions blended contemporary American dance music with Caribbean and Latin themes a style reflected in pieces such as Trocha and later in his well-known ragtime composition Panama 1911 which remained a staple of early jazz and dance orchestras. "Henry Tolman January 15 1821 Boston MA-November 20 1888 Cohasset MA had operated his own firm dealing in musical instruments and umbrellas since 1846 and had began publishing in 1849. In the early 1850s he merged with George D. Russell to form Russell & Tolman. One of the most significant music publishers in the United States during the 19th century Russell & Tolman published a great deal of popular music as well as works of noted American composers such as George F. Root. They also sold pianos. After the dissolution of Russell & Tolman in 1862 Tolman took over the catalogue and continued until 1870 as Henry Tolman & Co. He sold his sheet music plates to Root & Cady in 1868. From 1862 to 1868 he was the sole publisher of the Boston Musical Times and in 1865 was elected vice-president of the Board of Music Trade. Russell was joined by his brother Joseph M. Russell in 1863 to form G.D. Russell & Co. a similar publishing and dealing business which also undertook printing work."
