Vintage flyer for a New Year's Eve event at avant-garde New York performance venue Renaissance House on December 31 1962.<br /> <br /> A unique confluence of critical moments for performers and arts organizations alike. Only a month earlier on November 23 1962 the Cecil Taylor Unit recorded their landmark 1963 live album "Nefertiti the Beautiful One Has Come" at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen. Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon released their acclaimed debut album "Archie Shepp-Bill Dixon Quartet" two months earlier in October 1962. The Living Theatre had just premiered their production of Bertold Brecht's 1926 play "Man Is Man" followed by a groundbreaking world tour. Finally a year prior the newly launched literary journal The Provincetown Review had published a chapter from Hubert Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel "Last Exit to Brooklyn" leading to the arrest of editor Bill Ward and a subsequent landmark 1961 obscenity trial.<br /> <br /> 14 x 8.5 inches. Annotations in manuscript ink on the verso noting the quartet's performance at the Metropolitan likely the Metropolitan Opera House along with a 1926 date stamp.<br /> <br /> Russian-American violin virtuoso Mischa Elman was born in Talnoye in the Russian Empire in 1891. Having revealed his perfect pitch and prodigious skill at the violin at a young age Elman studied at the Imperial Academy of Music then the St. Petersburg Conservatory and made his London debut in 1905. He moved to the US upon the outbreak of World War I and became an American citizen in 1923 recording and touring extensively throughout the country over the ensuing six decades.<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. A rare photograph of the the great Hungarian quartet with printed signatures from members Feri Roth Jeno Antal Ferenc Molnar and Janos Scholz and signed and inscribed by Roth at the head in ink. He has penned an inscription to a Miss Mary Jane Clinite dated San Francisco July 17 1937 and signed "the Roth's." One slight crease at the lower right; overall in fine condition. 9.75 x 7.75 inches 24.7 x 20 cm.<br style="">The Roth Quartet founded in Budapest in 1922 made its debut in Paris in 1924 and toured the US in the late 1920's before permanently settling there due to the rise of fascism in Europe. They premiered many important modern works including quartets by Prokofiev and Korngold.<br style=""> unknown books
