Elles viennent illustrer un exceptionnel ensemble de 70 photographies inédites réalisées par Ralph Fassey qui pendant près de trente ans a accompagné Pierre Boulez. C'est de son fonds photographique riche de plus de 3 000 clichés que sont extraites les photographies ici présentées livrant un portrait intime et pluriel d'un homme qui a profondément marqué son temps et l'histoire de la musique. L'ouvrage est complété par deux documents exceptionnels : le premier est la reproduction inédite des dernières notes manuscrites de Boulez où il esquisse ses projets en cours et ses réflexions pour l'avenir le second présente quatre schémas électroniques autographes réalisés par Giuseppe Di Giugno en 1979 pour la conception de la machine 4X. C'est le compositeur Luciano Berio invité par Pierre Boulez pour prendre en 1974 la direction de la section électroacoustique de l'Ircam qui supervise un projet de synthèse et transformation de sons complexes en temps réel. L'année suivante Giuseppe Di Giugno et les chercheurs de l'Ircam développent alors plusieurs versions successives de processeurs numériques : 4A le premier prototype 4B 4C pour aboutir en 1981 au très performant système 4X. Cette « station de travail musicale 4X » permettra au musicien d'analyser de synthétiser et de manipuler numériquement le son en étant capable de créer de nouvelles sonorités et de transformer en temps réel le son issu d'instruments traditionnels. Pierre Boulez sera le premier à utiliser la 4X pour son oeuvre Répons en 1981 : « vingt-quatre instrumentistes occupent une scène centrale autour de laquelle le public est assis ; cet orchestre central ne subit aucune transformation sonore de la part du dispositif électroacoustique et informatique. Le public est lui-même encadré par six solistes et six haut-parleurs qui en restituent le son traité en temps réel.
