This work comprises of civil ecclesiastical judicial military naval and municipal rolls of the official personages from the earliest periods to the nineteenth century. There are also the sovereigns of Europe the peerage of England and Great Britain and more. Written and compiled by Joseph Haydn. With letters from William Brenchley Rye to his book dealer loosely inserted. Rye was the keeper of printed books in the British Museum. In a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the spine and to the joints. Heavier rubbing to the tail of spine. Cracks to the spine due to wear. Minor bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown Mr Wm Campbell. Internally binding is strained in places. Loosely inserted are articles on this work and the author. Letters loosely inserted from William Brenchley Rye keeper of books at the British museum. Small article on Rye loosely inserted also. Pages are generally bright with the odd spots throughout. With a bookbinder's label for Cash and Astle Coleman Street London to the rear pastedown. 'The whole comprehending a body of information classical political and domestic from the earliest accounts to the present time'. There is a publisher's catalogue to the front. Direct from the Widdrington library at Newton Hall - the family's eighteenth-century country house near Alnwick Northumberland - with the armorial bookplate of S.E. Widdrington and a pencil shelfmark to the front pastedown. Samuel Edward Widdrington formerly Cook 1787-1856 was an English writer. Having served as a Royal Navy Captain he spent some years in Spain and wrote several books about the country. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. He assumed the name Widdrington by royal license and purchased the moiety in 1842. In 1854 he served as High Sheriff of Northumberland. He inherited the Newton Hall estate from his father Joseph Cook. In a cloth binding with blindstamped decoration. Externally some shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Bright with occasional light foxing prominent to margins and first and last few pages. Some dusting to extreme outer margins. Several of the pages are unopened. Very Good Edward Moxon hardcover

Posterity has upheld his own assessment of it as far more accurate informative and well-organised than any of its rivals. It remains a important resource and is still consulted by historians.
