40371Oblong octavo ca. 120 x 212 mm. 29 measures in F minor from the first theme for water notated in black ink in bass "dessus" clef. With autograph envelope postmarked "Paris 5 XII 1933" addressed to Elinor Ann Schloss on West 72nd Street in New York City.

Inscribed and signed by the composer: "à Miss Elinor Ann Schloss" and "Xbr" October 1933 at head and "Avec les hommages de l'Apprenti Sorcier et de Paul Dukas" at lower outer margin.

Slightly worn and browned; cut from a larger sheet with slightly irregular outer and lower margins; creased at central fold and very slightly overall; remnants of tape to verso; envelope worn and browned with upper margin ragged where opened and remnants of tape to both recto and verso. L'apprenti sorcier based on Goethe's 1797 poem Der Zauberlehring was first performed in Paris on 18 May 1897 by the Societe Nationale de Musique with the composer conducting. The work had four main themes: for water for the broom for the apprentice and for the sorcerer. It gained universal recognition with the incorporation of the music into the animated film "Fantasia" produced by the Disney Studios in 1940 featuring the cartoon character Mickey Mouse in the role of the apprentice.

"The immediate success and world-wide renown of L'Aprenti sorcier which first brought the name of Dukas before the general public was well deserved; for this dazzling picture in sound of the tribulations that befell the disobedient sorcerer's apprentice in Goethe's ballad is a little masterpiece of 'representational' music most imaginatively conceived and brilliantly carried out. The composer's mastery of the orchestra and command of every refinement of instrumental colour is already apparent." Myers: Modern French Music from Fauré to Boulez p. 58.

"Despite his slender output Dukas's place is at the heart of French musical life at the turn of the 20th century. Each of his compositions reveals a stylistic individuality and modern aesthetic tendencies combined with a deep respect for classical form. Dukas's unique position as a composer is evident in the character of his melodic material in its symphonic elaboration and in his consummate skill in orchestration. It is their subject matter that places his stage works among the most adventurous compositions of their time." Manuela Schwartz and G.W. Hopkins in Grove Music Online. unknown

1979148235New Jersey: Princeton University Press 1979. First edition early printing of this curated collection of Einstein’s writings. Octavo original leather frontispiece. Boldly signed by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman on the front free endpaper. Helen Dukas 1896–1982 was Albert Einstein’s longtime secretary and trusted confidante serving in that role from 1928 until his death in 1955. Deeply involved in preserving and organizing Einstein’s legacy she co-edited several collections of his writings and letters and played a key role in curating the Einstein Archives at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Banesh Hoffmann 1906–1986 was a physicist and mathematician who collaborated with Albert Einstein and made significant contributions to relativity and quantum mechanics. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Uncommon signed by both contributors. Albert Einstein: The Human Side 1979 edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffmann offers a unique perspective on Einstein beyond his scientific achievements by compiling his personal letters reflections and anecdotes. Unlike traditional biographies that focus on his contributions to physics this collection highlights Einstein’s thoughts on philosophy politics ethics and personal relationships revealing his wit humility and deep moral convictions. Through carefully selected writings the book presents Einstein as both a brilliant scientist and a deeply introspective individual who grappled with the social and ethical implications of his work. Princeton University Press hardcover
2263Albert Einstein Three Original Typed Letters Signed TLS from Helen Dukas to Yale Professor A.B. Lerner with Three Carbon Copies of Corresponding TLS's from Lerner to Dukas 1967-1968

Six pages total with four about 11 x 8.5 inches and two about 10 x 8 inches. All are either tissue paper or thin typing paper. Recto only. Several with corrections in blue pen or type-overs. The three Dukas letters signed in blue pen. Fine Condition.

Interesting set of correspondence between long-time Albert Einstein personal assistant Helen Dukas and early Einstein biographer Aaron B. Lerner professor of Dermatology at Yale University Medical School.

Helen Dukas became Einstein's personal assistant in 1928 and was named by Einstein as co-executor of his literary estate along with Dr. Nathan Rosen. Together Dukas and Rosen collaborated on the compilation of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein. Dukas also co-authored "Albert Einstein: Creator and Rebel" and co-edited "Albert Einstein: The Human Side."

Aaron Bunsen Lerner was the first chair of the Department of Dermatology at Yale University. As a researcher Lerner is best known for the discovery of melatonin. In 1973 Lerner published "Einstein & Newton; a Comparison of the Two Greatest Scientists" and likely the book he was working on while corresponding with Helen Dukas.

In this small collection Dukas is responding to specific queries from Lerner plus proof-reading portions of Lerner's drafts of his book on Einstein. As such Dukas provides details which only someone very close to Einstein could provide including Einstein quotes and insights plus personal details including where Einstein vacationed in the years 1934-1943.

Perhaps not groundbreaking details yet first-person information gleaned from Einstein's personal assistant who worked directly with Albert Einstein from 1928 through his death in 1955. Dukas remained working for the Einstein family until her death in 1982. unknown
