Taylor established the first research & development department in an American instrument industry in 1911 and proved key to the United States’ success in World War I manufacturing 99% of all altimeters airplane stratascopes inclinometers and oxygen systems. First edition of this unusually scarce catalogue marketing the several models of Spurden-Rutt’s electric Organestra pipe organ intending to compete with Compton Wurlitzer & Christie organs. The Palace Cinema Slough Theatre in Buckinghamshire and Super Cinema in Oxford had ordered models by the time this was issued and they provided an exceptional accompaniment to the silent movies playing at the time. Spurden-Rutt 1881-1960 apprenticed with Alfred Kirkland of Holloway opened his business in 1899 at the age of 18 and lived in his factory with his living room doubling as a board room. In order to impress clients and visitors with how many staff he would have them run around removing and changing coats appearing in assorted different rooms. He continued as an organ builder until 1959. He has been informed by 'Mr. Hill of the Victoria & Albert Museum' that Harington has 'a Backstaff'. Adams has been 'looking out for one for some years' without success and would like to purchase Harington's if he has 'no use for it. 'I think Mr. Hill mentioned to you that I had a collection of old navigating instruments & he has very kindly been trying to find a backstaff for me'. He ends in the hope that Harington will 'excuse the zeal of the collector'. According to Bruyns and Dunn 'Sextants at Greenwich' 2009 Adams' search for a backstaff proved unsuccessful. Le traducteur a également joint trois autres essais et articles relatifs à la thermodynamique. Martine mourut aux Amériques lors d'une expédition en 1741 et ne vit pas le succès de ses recherches. Cette série d'essais fut la première critique sérieuse du thermomètre à 80 degrés de Réaumur.
