Ezekiel Sargent began selling assaying and prospecting equipment to gold prospectors passing through Chicago on their way West to the California Gold Rush in 1849 and continued to prosper and expand even through the 1871 Chicago fire. This is the original edition and not a modern reprint or reproduction. James Swinburne was a very experienced and highly respected electrical consulting engineer, his expertise ranging from power stations to wireless telegraphy. In 1902-1903 he was President of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE); in 1912 appointed by the British Government as member of the Technical Committee considering the Imperial Wireless Scheme.
